Wonderful old Quinta with a fabulous collection of precious objects and furniture

The house itself is quite amazing and its contents are staggering. I have resisted giving it more than 3/5 because there weren't any guides as such, and as a result it can be somewhat overwhelming. There are wardens who direct you through the house so that an easy sequence can be made from room to room. Without this it may be confusing and, if busy, possibly chaotic, due of the sheer number of things to look at!

At EU 2.50 it is definitely worth a look, and can be included in a trip to Quinta das Cruzes and Santa Clara Monastery as they are all on the same street.

Delightful - this wide and impressive collection of the solicitor Dr. Frederico de Freitas is housed in the eighteenth century former residence of the the venerable collector in Funchal, Madeira

What started out as a simple hobby by the solicitor turned out to be a very impressive collection of fine art exhibits, arefacts and antiques from both Madeira and all over the world

The museum, known amongst the locals as the Casa da Calçada, is within walking distance from Funchal centre. The same street has three other museums nearby. Print a city centre street map from the web or buy one before you go - it will be a good investment.
