We really enjoyed the Vine. It is a design hotel, so be prepared for a few things that look great, but are not necessarily what you might expect! It does however look fabulous. We were in a standard room, so I can't say how much nicer the more expensive rooms/suite's are, but we found it lovely. Some of the more 'interesting' features, were the clear glass partition between the toilet and the shower, and the bath in the main room area, behind a glass partition. It was fine for us, and I would say for any couple who are quite familiar with each other's little habits etc!! It is very much a couple's place however.
Other reviews have mentioned the complex lighting system, and yes, it is quite 'flexible' in terms of lighting options, but after a little play, easy enough to get the hang of.
Service was excellent, in line with a 5 star hotel. Staff were very polite, courteous and helpful. Breakfast is included in the price and is great, a huge range from fruit, cereals, breads and pastries, cold meats through to a pretty good full(ish) English breakfast.
The rooftop terrace is lovely, again very stylish, great views, a pool that is just about big enough to swim around in for a bit, and a great cocktail bar with a retractable canopy overhead. There is also the Uva restaurant up here, and I have reviewed that separately (also excellent!).
In summary, we were very happy with the Vine, we wanted a bit of luxury, and that is what we got, without actually having to spend a fortune.

Lovely design hotel. Excellent breakfast. Great service. Cool roof terrace and pool.
Spa is small but luxurious with good massage.
Nice location in the city. Close to restaurants and Marina, shopping mall.
We rented a car and had easy acces to parking garage of the hotel.
We travelled as a family with 2 girls of 13 and 17 years old.
Would not recommend hotel for small children.

We stayed here for 1 night after staying at The Cliff Bay - what a difference. Yes very modern, different hotel with a funky vibe but impractical and disappointing. It is not quiet or peaceful, the junior suite we stayed in was too hot and the air conditioning took forever to work. The room is so dark you cannot see to do your makeup and the gadgets took a while to figure out!

Nice pool area but too small for a hotel of around 79 rooms.

We ate at UVA restaurant 2 years ago and had a wonderful meal and experience this time it was a disaster from start to finish. They were under staffed, no knowledgeable wine waiter, service was poor and the food was below average. It was our last night and there was 11 of my family so this made the experience very disappointing.

Breakfast was ok - the outside area was loud as roadworks

Apparently our taxi driver said others had eaten at UVA lately and had an equally poor experience.

PS - Beware we had 2 glasses of champagne and it was 44 Euros and it was only Piper you can buy for £20 in the UK!

We spent a week at the Vine Hotel in Funchal in July. Weather was a little cloudy at times but always warm. The highlight of the week was the hotel. Super position close to the city, harbour and all amenities (no road noise either). The best part is definitely the roof terrace - the view, the pool, the comfy beds and the bar (good value happy hours)! The views of Funchal are great day or night and the temperature never seems to fluctuate. The views are shared the restaurant which although a little pricey is very good quality. Breakfast is varied and of excellent quality with a huge choice of hot and cold - eat it on the terrace and again feel the warmth of the Madeira air. We experienced a 'couple's retreat' in the Spa which again was a little pricey but very relaxing and melted the stress away. Bedrooms are roomy and very contemporary. We loved all the features - the auto blinds, the big bath, the wet room shower and yes the quirky lighting set up! We'd definitely go back. We got out and about a lot seeing much of what the island had to offer in the week we were there - levada walk, mini bus tour, boat trip, market, variety of restaurants, shops. The island is very green and every square metre appears to have something growing on it, a lovely change from some of the more barren Mediterranean or Canaries landscapes.

Room tip: 5th floor is great looking out onto Funchal and the sea but I imagine all are good!

We found this hotel to be very close to perfect for what we look for in one; Stylish, clean, very good staff, excellent breakfast in a nice atmosphere and at a great location. The swimming pools are fabulous and there is even a real, modern gym, also available to the locals and popular but not too crowded. There should be access to the gym by elevator but we could only go back to our floor from the gym, not vice versa. Entry via the street is not too inconvenient though.
Can't really think of anything bad to say about the Vine. I would most certainly recommend this hotel to anyone, especially couples. Make sure to try the happy hour by the pool! Also the lunch options by the pool are well worth the money.

Room tip: I suppose all rooms are good but perhaps try to avoid the highs floors directly beneath the pool unless you like the sound of running water during the night.
