“Unusual and Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2014

Beautiful hotel with excellent service. Very unusual design hence being called a design hotel. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Hotel is situated in a shopping mall and is close to lots of eating places. Would love to go back.

Room Tip: Every floor has a theme to a different season but all are nice.

Enjoyed an excellent April week at the Vine with friends. We all enjoyed it but, to carp, we felt that in some areas comfort had been sacrificed in the pursuit of style. Where mood lighting in interior public areas might have suited some, I felt it was gloomy. The inside bar, near the reception area, was akin to an airport transit lounge with not even a scintilla of atmosphere. Perhaps that's why so few people used it. Room lighting was whacky but impressive. Under bed sensor lighting was an excellent innovation but was on a timer. So, if you got out of bed at night for a wee, you had to perform pretty sharpish or the light went out. However, all this paled into insignificance when you considered the magnificent terrace bar on top of the hotel, its standout feature. Flanked by an infinity pool down one side and a huge bubbling jacuzzi along another, the bar was superb with 360 degree views of Funchal. The staff were brill; friendly, knowledgeable, informative and smiling. Happy two hours from 6 to 8 was a great experience. The acid test: Would I go again? Yes!!!

Spent a lovely week in the Vine it is definitely a design hotel which is to our taste but could understand not for everyone.Room on the 5th floor had a lovely view and quite. Loved the massive big bed with good quality bedding. Free mini bar until it needed replenishing then you have to pay. Dressing gowns and slippers.Bath in the bedroom, waterfall shower lovely toiletries etc. Turn down service is provided every day if required room was cleaned every day Breakfast had fresh fruit, smoked salmon juices etc all the usual things really lovely fresh and replenished frequently attentive staff.
Stunning views on the rooftop with pool, jacuzzi, bar, nice double and single sun beds.lovely cocktails especially at happy hour 6 till 8 every day
UVA restaurant for 40€ 3 course meal enjoyed but had better in local restaurants. The hotel is very central with lots of good restaurants within walking distance taxis just outside.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Vine Hotel and would recommend to fellow travellers.

Room Tip: 5th floor at the back of the hotel lovely views and quite

Service, staff and facilities are all excellent. First class. Faultless.
The approach to the hotel via the shopping centre is a little underwhelming, but once inside the interior designers have done their level best to create the obligatory Wow! factor. The lobby and public areas, once your eyes have adjusted to the ambience lighting, are up to scratch with the best the 21st century has to offer.
The rooms likewise are the product of a fertile designer's imagination. Under bed lighting, glass walls to the bathroom, dark brown walls and ceiling, 3 pillows each of different sizes, walk in shower with pebble flooring etc etc etc. However it was clear that the designer had never spent a week's holiday in the room. No hooks to hang your wet coat up when you come in from the rain. No shaver socket in the bathroom. No full height shower rose. Insufficient lighting in the bathroom - ambience lighting is no good for makeup and shaving!
But it all looked and felt like a five star hotel - and now it's back home to reality for us where I can see myself properly, warts and all, in the bathroom mirror!
If there's one thing that stands out - the staff. They are a credit to the hotel.

Just back from a 4 night stay at The Vine and have to say we had a wonderful time. The hotel really does have the WOW factor! We had a fabulous junior suite on the 4th floor that was stunning. No problems with the lighting controls and hubby was very impressed with the under bed sensor lighting and the electric blinds! I loved the bath -deep and more for sitting in than lying in but felt very decadent with a glass of bubbly in my hand! Nice touches included the toiletries (smelt lovely) and the free drinks in the mini fridge and Pringles that were included. Have only had this before when staying all inclusive so to have this on a b&b basis was great. Only slight moan was that there were only facilities to make a nespresso coffee and no tea making facilities in the room.
Location excellent for all the main areas of Funchal -as others have said it is above a shopping centre and in quite a busy area so it is noisy, especially with the ongoing building work at the marina which is constant, but obviously not the hotel's fault.
The staff were great - all very friendly and helpful, in particular Paulo the barman, who spent most evenings discussing premiership football with hubby! Breakfast was good and all staff very helpful, not sure about the comment previously re fried eggs - we had these available every day alongside the scrambled egg.
Only disappointment was that we only got to sit on the terrace on our last evening for happy hour due to the inclement and variable weather that we had, which was a shame as it was beautiful up there and I was looking forward to spending a few hours chilling in the early evening sun - not to be.
Overall though we had a lovely stay. I would recommend this hotel 100% as long as you realise that it is a "design" hotel and very different from the traditional Madeira hotels.

As with all my reviews, this is the 100th, I will start with the positives.

Location. the hotel is in a great location, close to 2 great gardens and within easy walking distance of the city and all the restaurants, cafés and city sights. The hotel is part of a smart shopping complex with a small supermarket in the base level and a nice bakery/coffee shop next to the entrance. Both very handy if you need some supplies.

Breakfast. A decent choice well presented and always topped up. The breakfast room is a calm location from which to plan and start the day. The staff are attentive and swift.

Staff. The front desk and waiting staff are attentive, efficient and ready to help.

UVA restaurant. For the price this is a great meal. The 40€ Pp fixed meal is wonderful. Both veggie and non veggie are catered for and the food is well presented and tasted as good as it looked.

The shower. Incredible, simple as that. Like standing under a huge waterfall. Frankly the best shower I have ever used.

The could do better...

Room cleaning. On one occasion some drink was spilt on the bed. The desk were informed but on returning the bed sheet was not replaced just swapped around so the wet stained part was not on sight but the sheet had not been changed. Also I am confident that the floor was not cleaned at all for the entire stay. There were dust bunnies all around the bed area. Not good enough for a 5 star hotel

The bath. In our room it was at the foot of the bed. It was huge but not comfortable at all. I am over 1.85m and even I couldn't get comfortable in it. After a long day exploring the hills this would have been welcomed!

The bathroom sink. As a man who wet shaves it was hopeless. It was a sheet of water falling onto a sloped marble slab. Rubbish.

Power supply. The 2 spare sockets were hidden away in the desk and could not accommodate a UK plug on a euro adaptor. For a modern traveller this isn't good enough. Only plug we could use was the one in the safe.

Hope this helps someone. The decor is calming with a lot of different textures and each floor is decorated from a different season which is a nice touch. Also each room is different so I can only comment on the room we stayed in.

The hotel has a nice design, and that is the unique selling piont of this hotel. But that is all I can say about this five star hotel.
* Rooms where ok, althoug I had several nights that the lights dit not work, and staff had problems fixing it.
* Location is very good: in center of Funchal. The entrance in the shopping mall can be better, more worthy of a 5 star hotel.
* The roof terrace is fantastic: nice view, nice place to be, relaxed and with privacy. And nice pool !
* Breakfast is good: a lot of choice and every day fresh orange juice.
* Friendly staff

But all in line: you can expect more from a five star hotel. Next time I will choose an other hotel in de city center of Funchal.
