Excellence in every way.
Only negative are the bathroom amenities are difficult to use, but nothing that would make my stay there less than excellent. The staff are very friendly and accommodating in every aspect, going out of their way to exceed every request...
Perfect location and outstanding rooms-decor-food-views
Highly recommended and unsterstandibly why they the best hotel in Europe
I WILL be back

This is an unusual hotel. It is built over a shopping centre and is a very boutique style. We were upgraded to a 'mini suite' as we were celebrating our anniversary and it was a good size room with a huge bed and a lovely double bath in the room itself. It is all mood lighting (not always great for putting on makeup!) and sometimes it is style over practicality - for example, the 'waterfall' shower, was lovely, but there's no indoor handle to pull the door closed when you're in it and it leaked like a sieve when you used it. The room could be a little noisy on a Friday and Asturday night, but was great for people watching. Also there is a big supermarket on the lower level of the shopping centre, which is really handy if you want to buy beers/wine that you can stick in your mini bar (first round is complimentary). The buffet breakfasts are good with items such as smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, pancakes etc as well as sparkling wine, which was a nice treat.
You go to this hotel for one thing though - the roof terrace is absolutely amazing! The views over Funchal by day or night are absolutely spectacular.... They have a Happy Hour between 6-8pm, which makes the drinks affordable and it is just a gorgeous place to relax, with very chilled out music and a sparkling clean infinity pool. A few things could be improved - they often ran out of towels and one evening towels had been heaped up on one of the lights (as it was not clearly marked where the used towels should go) which was not a good impression for the guests visiting the Mchelin starred restaurant. Also crockery at breakfast was occasionally a little chipped, which is not befitting a 5 star hotel. However, overall we had a great stay and the hotel is very central, which is great for sightseeing and the Old Town is about 20 mins walk away and is a real treat for an evening meal.

Room Tip: Room 214 was great for people watching, though could be a little noisy.

Good location not far from the harbor and attractions in Funchal. The rooms are stylish but not very practical, we booked into a junior suite which had a separate shower, wash basin and toilet. The shower had a 'waterfall' function which seemed like a nice feature until it overflowed and leaked through the door into the bedroom. The wash basin was similar in that it looked very nice but not very practical when brushing teeth etc. There was a backlit picture over the (very ample sized) bed which would have been nice, unfortunately there was a large stain that was highlighted when you turned the light on. The toilet door had no lock and had large gaps, ok if you've been with you're partner for some time but even then Im not sure you really want to hear what they are doing in the toilet amplified and broadcast into the room (which is what tended to happen). The maid service was very good and the afternoon turn down service was a nice touch. Breakfast was very good with a large selection although if Im being picky the cooked selection was not completely warm on occasion. Staffing was too low in the evenings there are two bars and not once did we see them manned without going to reception and asking for it. They only open one bar at a time and we found it quite poor to be sent up to the roof terrace bar only to find it closed as well, we gave up in the end. The uvo restaurant on the top floor promised to be very good but was let down by snippy waiters. We booked a meal one evening and I have to be fair, the food was of a high standard, unfortunately the sommelier wasn't. He made the whole experiance uncomfortable by cracking jokes that weren't funny like pretending he couldn't find us on the reservations list etc and didn't even offer to show us the wine list-when another waiter offered he seemed to take acception to this which made it all a bit awkward. To top it off they forgot to bring out the glass of madiera I had specifically asked for with desert and then offered it as we asked for the bill. All in all ruined a nice meal but maybe we were unlucky as the other waiters seemed very nice. Overall nice place to stay, maybe a little overpriced considering the issues with the room and bars not being open/manned in the evening. Don't bother with their restaurant as there are loads of really nice places to eat in and around town for less money and quite frankly better service.

As everyone mentions the lights and switches are a problem. Even staff unsure on there operation. Air con was effected too. Hotel is very dark and modern and located in the centre of town. Breakfasts are excellent, don't miss out on the free fizz!
We ate once at the hotel. It's mitchelin standard with the prices to match.
Room was cleaned everyday to a high standard. Would I stay here again? No although good I would prefer a hotel that catered more for the holiday maker. This is more like a business hotel.

We spent 4 nights at the Vine hotel and were very comfortable in our large and beautifully designed room (we were 2 adults and 2 children)... the hotel had very kindly upgraded us on arrival. We enjoyed the rooftop pol when the sun came out, enjoyed the breakfasts and the only item where they could improve is the breakfast coffee... The brewed stuff was awful and the espresso even worse... but we are very fussy about our coffee... :) Would definitely recommend staying here.

This hotel was fantastic upon arrival! The rooms are way modern - there were 3 of us so we had a suite and it was really cool -- but not all that functional. My daughters didn't care, it was so hip they loved it. Cool faucets, cool bathtub, cool everything. Trying to put makeup on in the morning was a chore as everything is dark. Hard to locate touch electric switches but once you do you still don't get a lot of light. And auto-off switches in the closet drove me crazy. Still, I loved it here, the 360 degree rooftop bar is amazing at night! Worth the price just for that view. The small plates during happy hour were really really good - some of the best food I had in Madeira. Oh, the jacuzzi was not warm at all, and that was the reason we booked the hotel. If that was usable I might never have left the place. The staff was very interested in knowing what would improve the place, which we were happy to tell them. I would love to come back!

The Vine is a modern boutique design hotel in the centre of Funchal, within easy walking distance of the main shops and attractions. It's not entirely obvious from outside as it's above a shopping centre but once inside the atmosphere is sophisticated and calming. The lighting takes a bit of getting used to, and some of the design isn't altogether practical but otherwise a great place to stay. The pool on the rooftop terrace has panoramic views. Breakfast is excellent. Recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have more chance of a sea view.
