“Brilliant modern hotel with wonderful ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

Just visited Madeira for the first time with my husband and had the good fortune to stay in the very comfortable Melia Madeira Mare Hotel. Its location in the Lido area is excellent adjacent to shops, good restaurants and a regular bus service. Promenade nearby is great for walks and fresh sea air. The buffet breakfast was very good and their evening cocktails in the bar had the wow factor! The staff were very nice and attentive. We had a very comfortable room with a "side sea view." Perhaps a full "sea view" might have been nicer but even so there was a very nice tranquil atmosphere overall. It is a very bright modern hotel and I loved the decor. Lovely pool area and the indoor pool/jacuzzi was great. Overall a lovely experience and we will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Possibly a higher floor we were on the 4th floor

Very pleasant hotel in the Lido area with good bus connections close by.
Directly on the excellent promenade walk with good sea views from "side sea view room".

Friendly and attentive staff.
We booked half board and were not disappointed with the food, fixed menu and buffet all very acceptable.
However, we were not impressed by the miserly amount of wine poured when we purchased wine by the glass rather than by the bottle. I reckon we were served 125ml at most which at €4 a glass was not acceptable. In comparison, the adjacent Granny Kitchen restaurant charged €1.75 for a full 250ml glass. Unlike the UK and several other EU countries, there seems to be no regulation in Madeira controlling the amount of wine poured when purchased by the glass.

Otherwise an excellent, well presented and clean hotel which we would thoroughly recommend.

Room Tip: Choose a western facing sea view room for evening sunshine.

Dear Valued Guest

Many thanks for taking the time to share your review on Tripadvisor. Your comments and feedback are important to us in delivering on our brand standards. Thank you too for your positive comments relative to our staff which has been shared internally with all.

Your remarks have been duly noted insofar as the amount of wine poured when purchasing by the glass - and this has been discussed internally with senior management. You are quite right currently there are no control regulations relative to the amount sold "by glass" back here in Madeira.

By the same token, we would like to make mention that we pride ourselves in making avail quality wines to our guests, whereas the same cannot be said at some offsite food outlets where the quality may be questionable... nevertheless, having said so, we do thank you once again for your comments and input which have been taken into consideration and review.

We hope you will consider returning to our lovely island and hope to welcome you back to our Resort !

Just returned from a 7 day repeat visit to the Melia Mare Hotel. The Hotel is a beautiful designed modern hotel of the minimalist style and has a general atmosphere of calm and tranquility about it and is kept spotlessly clean in all areas. We opted to stay in a Master Suite this time and was not disappointed. The rooms was furnished to the highest standard with a massive double bed(not two singles pushed together)wardrobe and sideboard with a large wall mounted LCD TV.,A very comfortable seating area with a sofa, side table with large LCD TV and Tea/Coffee facilities and a dining table and chairs with a door leading off to the balcony.A small kitchenette was provided with a two ring hotplate, sink, microwave oven, full size fridge and all the kitchen utensils, cutlery, crockery etc.The bathroom had bath with hand held shower, rain fall shower cubicle, twin sinks and toilet with a ( glass? ) privacy door. The massive balcony had a dining table and chairs and sun loungers with parasol. All kept spotlessly clean.
We only booked bed and breakfast so cannot comment on the evening meals but going off the standard of the breakfast glad we hadn't booked evening meals. We had pre informed the hotel that my wife is Coeliac and would therefore require gluten free food.
The restaurant at breakfast time had hardly any staff on(,no maitre de for 5 of the 7 days )and trying to get hold of gluten free food was painful! The quality and variety of the breakfast food was at best mediocre. The fruit island had a selection of prepared fruits, melon, pineapple, grapes, kiwi, sliced oranges, tinned pears, tinned peaches.A small chiller with Danone yogurts with two flavoured yogurts(one with cereals so not gluten free)and plain yogurts,A large circular table with all manner of cakes, pastries, biscuits etc, none gluten free.Sliced sausage island with sliced ham(gluten free?doubtful)small selection of processed cheeses, fruit juices, cereals(none gluten free)milk, water and sparkling wine.A large circular table with bread rolls etc, (none gluten free),bowls of jam, honey, marmalade.
The hot food selection contained from right to left, all prepared in bain maries,Bacon,Tinned mushrooms, tinned cocktail sausages,Baked Beans,Grilled tomatoes.Pre made crepes with syrups,Chefs station,no one there for 80% of the time, where in theory you can order a fresh omelette!Next is the toaster with sliced bread(none gluten free)6 hash browns, bread and egg pudding(NGF),rubber textured fried eggs, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs,This selection never varied during our stay.On two of the days there was no hot plates available so had to use cold plates to put your warm food on,NOT good enough!
Although the lady chef was very nice when we asked for gluten free bread we was never offered any other type of gluten free food,ie cereals, biscuits, cakes. Most of the time there was no one to ask!The one time we got the chance to ask the maitre de for the gluten free bread he went off into the kitchen and never returned leaving us stood there like fools for 20 mins before the chef bobbed out and we collared her.Not acceptable in a 5 Star Hotel! All the staff we came into contact with was very polite and a special thanks to Marcos on reception. This is a man who knows what he is doing so if you need any assistance look out for him!
There are many varied places to eat within easy reach of the Hotel, depending on your tastes and further afield if you want to treat yourself there is the Michelin * Restaurant at the Cliff Bay just down the road.We used the Bella Ilha just across from the hotel and can highly recommend.A lot of the locals use this small but comfortable place but be aware if you sit inside near the door we will get smoke drift from the small outside seating area!Great food though and excellent staff. The Qasbah on the lower promenade is also very good and if the weather is good they have a lovely outside dining area looking out over the ocean.
Pingo Doce have a supermarket on the upper road above the hotel with a self service cafe and there is a massive Pingo Doce on the lower promenade road, down the hill and turn left, approx 500m.
Do explore Funchal,it is a beautiful city and very pedestrian friendly and a great place to explore even though the traffic can be heavy at times.
We enjoyed our holiday, even with the storms! but are sorry the hotel couldn't meet our expectations this time with regards the breakfasts and are not sure if we would make further reservations.

Dear Valued Guest

Firstly our sincere thank you to you for posting your very detailed review on Tripadvisor. We're sorry that your stay did not meet entirely with your expectations and was marred relative to the lack of variety of gluten free food items available; we can assure you, though, that your comments are being addressed internally with senior management.

We thank you for your constructive criticism herein and appreciate your remarks which are of utmost importance to us and fundamental in aiding us in our constant efforts to meet with our guest expectations - with a view to ensuring complete guest satisfaction.

We apologize for the inconsistency in service experienced during breakfast which has also been alerted and actioned internally with the respective department heads.

On the other hand, we appreciate your kind comments on our suite facilities and shall convey your special mention to Marco too at Reception Desk - who will be pleased and further motivated by your positive feedback.

We hope to be able to welcome you back sometime to our lovely island and hope this recent experience has not deterred you from returning to our resort as well.

With kind regards and best wishes

My husband & I chose Madeira as the destination for our 'babymoon', a last holiday in the sun together as a couple before I was too advanced in my pregnancy to fly. The Melia Madeira Mare (MMM), although definitely not in the traditional Manueline Portuguese style favoured by other establishments in Funchal, was a perfect choice of hotel for our travelling needs as everything was on-site with all the ultra mod-cons (and not too far from the district hospital in case of emergency, as my fastidious hubby ensured!).

The MMM certainly lives up to its reputation as a plush modern hotel with amazing facilties and very good service. The rooms were incredibly comfortable with all the kit, the bathroom was divine and I loved the in-built speakers so you could listen to your choice of radio or tv programme whilst relaxing in the bath! The outdoor pool area was heaven with a large pool, baby paddling pool, sunloungers that dipped into the water and of course that amazing view of the Atlantic, what a calming & soothing sight! In fact, it wasn't until our last day that I ventured onto the terraces and discovered there were other mezzanine levels for sunbathers, with an enormous cabana stuffed with pillows and billowing linens to shelter from the scorching rays (see photos). Indoors, the swimming pool and spa were equally impressive and virtually deserted (I suppose e/o was outside mesmerized by the Atlantic!), so if you wanted a more private swim or moment of relaxing solitude there was the opportunity to have both.

Breakfast was on a grand scale and impeccably served; I lost count of the various dishes and foods on offer but took especial note of the 'Portuguese' table decorated in the middle of the buffet area which served locally-sourced and traditional healthy products, a lovely touch. I have to admit that I did also indulge in a 'champagne' brekkie one morning of our stay, it was too tempting watching other diners helping themselves to glasses of refreshing fizz readily available from the chilled bottles on the counter. When in Rome...

Other points to mention about the MMM: reception staff are polite, accommodating and infinitely helpful. We were given a fantastic recommendation by one of the concierge for the seafood restaurant O Barqueiro & absolutely loved it there (go at sunset, the view is spectacular). There is a tiny car rental place up the hill opposite the hotel, very convenient if you want to hire a vehicle to explore the rest of the island which we sadly only did for a day as my condition didn't really allow me to take on some of the more adventurous levada walks. There are also grocery stores opposite available for snacks & essentials.

A small point to mention is the location of the MMM: its situated in the Lido-Sol area of Funchal and as such is NOT in the centre of the capital or near the port; in order to get to the historical centre you need to take a bus or taxi (bus stop right outside hotel though so no biggie) which may not be ideal for everyone. However, for those who like a dip in the ocean or are keen swimmers, the area is home to the large public Lido (hence the name) from where I believe there is access to a rocky outcrop and the ocean; this may appeal as there are very few sandy beaches in and around Funchal (for those you need to get a cruise to the island of Porto Santo!) so hardly any opportunity to sunbathe directly on a beach.

I would really love to have awarded the MMM a top 5* rating as we truly did have a most amazing vacation here, myself and bump never felt better during our stay. I have to deduct a half-point for the fact that some of the evening entertainment advertised in the hotel never materialised which was most disappointing to this pregnant lady! We were all ready for a 'parrot-show-extravanganza' but the handler & birds were so late in turning up plus management became so flustered that most of the audience dispersed, including us. We did get a free drink at the pool-side bar to make up for it though!

Thank you kindly for taking the time to post your very kind positive and detailed comments regarding your stay with us last year at Melia Madeira Mare.

We’re truly delighted to hear that our services and facilities met with your approval and that we were able to create a memorable and positive experience for you during your “babymoon” visit to our lovely island ☺ .

We do sincerely hope the birth went very well and all’s well with you and the baby!

Your compliments and remarks are very much appreciated as we continuously strive to provide a welcoming and comfortable experience to all our guests.

We do apologize for the incident with the “parrot and bird” show; the person responsible for the show had an unfortunate occurrence with his transport which caused the delay.

We trust this has not deterred you from returning to our lovely island and to Melia Madeira Mare sometime in the very near future and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Lovely quiet rooms. It was our wedding anniversary and the staff made a big effort to make the stay special. All the staff were extremely friendly. We are looking forward to returning.

We got a cheap deal at this hotel for a week on half board basis.
On arrival we were parked our hire car in the secure underground car park then made our way to reception. We we instantly impressed by the large, well decorated public area and the checking in process was efficient with pleasant staff.
We went to the room which was impressive with a comfortable bed and nice bathroom. We had a nice side sea view. Looking at the layout of the hotel I would think that almost every room has some view of the sea.
There was a well set out pool area with a bar. Towels and lounger cushions were provided and again there was a good view of the sea.
Some minor niggles were the lack of milk in the room. Two small UHT pots really does not suffice but due to the refrigerated mini bar we were able to get fresh milk from the spar shop 25 yards away opposite the hotel.
FOOD
From my limited experience of 5 star hotels the food provided was not 5 star food.
Dinner
It was perfectly acceptable for the price we had paid and was always well presented but the chef really should taste his food before it gets sent out as on a number of occasions far too much salt had been used and I like plenty of salt. My partner had to leave food due to too much salt. Some meals were swimming in grease too.
The first night we were there it was a hot buffet and I found this to be really nice but the remaining meals were table d'hôte with waiter service. I think this was due to the lack of guests on the week we were there. The service was very pleasant and efficient and generally the meals were very nice but just didn't quite hit the mark. Bread served in the evening was not the freshest and probably left over from the morning.
Little choice for dessert, either cheese and biscuits or fruit with a couple of what appeared to be bought in puddings such as fairly tasteless cheesecake or tiramisu.
Breakfast
Very big selection for breakfast. Buffet style with good omelettes cooked while you wait. Excellent continental breakfast. Cooked breakfast not quite so good. The bacon had been cooked in the oven and had the consistency of beef jerky. Coffee was a bit wishy washy.

Don't let my criticism of the food put you off. I am a little fussy but overall it was quite nice and tasty just expected a little better from a five star hotel.
If I was booking the hotel direct I would go for the b & b option and eat out at night. Some nice restaurants in the immediate area and Funchal centre a short taxi or bus ride away.

Overall a lovely 5 star hotel and a great stay only slightly marred by the quality of the food.
I would stay here again in an instant.
