“Lovely hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

We got a cheap deal at this hotel for a week on half board basis.
On arrival we were parked our hire car in the secure underground car park then made our way to reception. We we instantly impressed by the large, well decorated public area and the checking in process was efficient with pleasant staff.
We went to the room which was impressive with a comfortable bed and nice bathroom. We had a nice side sea view. Looking at the layout of the hotel I would think that almost every room has some view of the sea.
There was a well set out pool area with a bar. Towels and lounger cushions were provided and again there was a good view of the sea.
Some minor niggles were the lack of milk in the room. Two small UHT pots really does not suffice but due to the refrigerated mini bar we were able to get fresh milk from the spar shop 25 yards away opposite the hotel.
FOOD
From my limited experience of 5 star hotels the food provided was not 5 star food.
Dinner
It was perfectly acceptable for the price we had paid and was always well presented but the chef really should taste his food before it gets sent out as on a number of occasions far too much salt had been used and I like plenty of salt. My partner had to leave food due to too much salt. Some meals were swimming in grease too.
The first night we were there it was a hot buffet and I found this to be really nice but the remaining meals were table d'hôte with waiter service. I think this was due to the lack of guests on the week we were there. The service was very pleasant and efficient and generally the meals were very nice but just didn't quite hit the mark. Bread served in the evening was not the freshest and probably left over from the morning.
Little choice for dessert, either cheese and biscuits or fruit with a couple of what appeared to be bought in puddings such as fairly tasteless cheesecake or tiramisu.
Breakfast
Very big selection for breakfast. Buffet style with good omelettes cooked while you wait. Excellent continental breakfast. Cooked breakfast not quite so good. The bacon had been cooked in the oven and had the consistency of beef jerky. Coffee was a bit wishy washy.

Don't let my criticism of the food put you off. I am a little fussy but overall it was quite nice and tasty just expected a little better from a five star hotel.
If I was booking the hotel direct I would go for the b & b option and eat out at night. Some nice restaurants in the immediate area and Funchal centre a short taxi or bus ride away.

Overall a lovely 5 star hotel and a great stay only slightly marred by the quality of the food.
I would stay here again in an instant.

“Great Week at the Melia Madeira”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

Excellent hotel with good facilities and attentive staff. Modern hotel with high standard of decor. Area around swimming pool being upgraded during our stay, but did not impact on facilities. Only had breakfast which was fine with a good choice to suit all tastes. Internet available free of charge throughout hotel. We would definitely revisit this hotel.

Room Tip: Pick a room where the sun shines in the afternoon so that you can enjoy the balcony if you don'...

“Great hotel just outside of Funchal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

We spent a week at this hotel which we booked online without fuss, the confirmation came almost immediately and email communication with the hotel was unproblematic. I must say we really liked our room which offered a superb sea view and from our balcony we enjoyed watching the sun rise and set. We decided to go for the superdeluxe room with sea view and found its price reasonable at just under 700 pounds for the week. The room itself was spacious and the shower extremely powerful. The facilities were also very good and we took advantage of the gym as well as the indoor pool, although I have to say that one side of the pool was far too shallow to enable one to swim proper lengths (understandably I did not feel like swimming in the outdoor pool). As January is the low season for Madeira the hotel’s restaurant offered a fixed (and limited) menu rather than its usual a la carte menu, so we did not try it, but the breakfast buffet catered for all tastes ranging from muesli to fruit to a fully cooked breakfast. The only inconvenience was the lack of wifi in the room. This meant that every time we wanted to go online to check a restaurant or find out about the weather forecast we had to go out of the room to do it (the closest wifi spot was near the lifts). I suspect that the problem could be solved by boosting the signal so that it reaches the rooms like our located at the end of the corridor.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with sea view, it might cost a bit more but the view is spectacular

Dear Valued Guest
Thank you for your review of our resort during your stay in our lovely island. We're glad you enjoyed your superior seaview room and that our facilities and services met with your approval on the whole. We regret the WI-FI hitches you experienced albeit this seems indeed to be an isolated case of late as our technicians have been in to review and tweak the system and we have had no further incidents of this nature. We hope to welcome you back again during your next visit to Madeira.
Kind regards and best wishes

“A lovely hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2013

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment on one of the higher floors overlooking the water for a week during Christmas and New Year. The apartment was lovely, very clean, well-furnished, very comfortable beds with high-quality bedding, and a beautiful view from the large balcony. The service was impeccable--the staff were professional, extremely helpful, and went out of their way to accommodate requests. Martim, in particular, was wonderful.
The resort is very well-located, in close walking distance to the town center, and there is a lovely promenade where one can walk for miles along the sea.
The only area of improvement (and the reason I did not give 5 stars) was the breakfast. We only ate breakfast there on New year's day, but it was disappointing if you are looking for healthy selections. With all the exceptional fresh fruits in Madeirta, it was odd that most of the fruit selection consisted of several canned options, the orange and grapefruit pieces did not taste fresh and there was only one selection of muesli. There were no plain non-fat yoghurts
and my husband found the scrambled eggs rather unappetizing.
Apart from that, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.
