“Definitely the best restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

We had lunch here twice and dinner once and would have eaten here again if we could have fitted it in. The food, service and presentation knocks spots off Do Forte and Mozart.
Lunch costs 7.95 euros from a set choice. I twice had vegetable lasagne - quite addictive. Lightly cooked veg, cheese sauce, cream cheese - delicious! One day the desser ( for 2.5 euros) was a chocolate tarte served with a rich chocolate sauce, the next time a whole bowl of pineapple carpaccio marinated in a champagne and ginger sauce. Amazing value.
The dinner didn't disappoint either, substantial starters, well cooked mains and delicious desserts.
I had a starter of parma ham & melon - with at least 5 slices of ham as compared to the half a slice in Do Forte. The creme brulee was served with ice cream and trimmings, so much better than elsewhere.
The waiters were great, friendly prompt service, remembered our names and kept the wine flowing.

“Round choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

We visited Monday night and was full inside. Outside some tables available. Make a reservation.
Ambiance is very nice. Located in the center of Funchal in a confortable decorated place. High ceilings and well lit.
We chose the fix-price menu with wine. Very nice choice. The food was outstanding. Wines, although not mid-top of the line, paired nicely.
Great for couples or small group of friends.

“Excellent value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

This was recommended by our hotel, and we were not disappointed. We chose from the a la carte menu, and when we ordered, the waiter told us we could have wine included for a ridiculously low price. We thought we would get just one glass, but no, we had white to start, then as much red as we could drink, then Madeira to finish. Brilliant food, best we'd eaten in Funchal

“Surprised to Find This Number One in Funchal”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We visited this Restaurant for the first time having seen it catapulted into the Number One spot in Funchal. Later in the week we ate again at the Do Forte and, for us, the two weren't even close. The latter offered a more creative menu which was much more professionally and creatively delivered. There wasn't much wrong with this place but the menu and delivery does not merit its current rating.

“Lunched there four times during our holiday in Madeira - says it all”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2013

This place is just great.

We didn't go for the evening fine dining - we were staying well outside Funchal and on our one night in town we went elsewhere.

But whenever going in or past Funchal at lunchtime we dropped in for one of their wonderful daily specials. At lunch it seemed to be where local businessmen pile in for a quick bite plus a leavening of locals or families out for a celebration lunch and just a few tourists.

You can go a la carte - and that would be fine. However the daily specials were just magic and remarkable value at €7.95 with desserts at €2.95. There might only be two or three choices of main course and only one of pud on the specials menu - but frankly everything was so good that we were totally happy to go along with what was on offer. We had squid in black ink risotto, braised duck, steak, poached sea bream, grilled seabream with risotto, calamari, scabbard fish as mains coconut tart, caramel cream brulee, some home made ice creams as dessert. Everything was great.

And the wines. I'm not good on Portuguese wines - we just asked Roberto, the wine waiter to select appropriately and all wine was excellent. One dessert came with port, others with madeira. Red wines from the Douro valley or Alentejo areas -- just great. We learned a lot.

The service was absolutely immaculate. The owner was always around hovering discreetly and making sure that everything was perfect. Diners are really made to feel welcome.

One very minor caution - some insect bites outside (even in February and at lunch time) My wife picked up some bites.

If this sounds like a rave review its because it is.
