“relaxing holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 2, 2013

just got back form calheta beach hotel really enjoyed the ten nights hotel is kept spotless fresh bedding every day food is good weather was really hot however there were one or two minor problems we went all inclusive but the bar stopped at ten then we had to pay for drinks not cheap either secondly the hotel caters mainly for French and german tourists and therefore hardly any of the hotel entertainment is done In English also the hotel does not change money nor does the bank unless you go to fuchal which is 45 mins away by bus arranged by the hotel we stopped in the sea view rooms which we understood to be better than the mountain view ones overall a lovely place to go to but there is not much to do at calheta so if you are looking forward to a lively holiday I would book somewhere else

Room Tip: we stopped in 505 right at the top super view and quiet

This hotel caters predominantly for German and French holiday makers. Only 3 British people there when I arrived. I was shown to an apartment up the hill over a small cafe up 4 flights of stone stairs with no lift. I had booked all inclusive pool/sea view to stay at a 4 star hotel with lifts to all floors. I am 70 years old and a solo woman traveller. I refused to unpack until they gave me what I had paid for. 5 hours later I was moved to the hotel. On the plus side, the hotel was spotless and the rooms were clean and well worth the 4 star rating. Staff were friendly and helpful, the pool was gorgeous and it has real imported sand and a private beach. Live entertainment every night was varied and very good .On the minus side, this part of West Madeira is very isolated, one small supermarket, pharmacy and a gift shop. You need to travel a good few miles to see the beauty of the island. Also I think it should be made known that very few British come to this hotel because it caters for German and French clients. Lots of sun loungers so no infighting or early morning dash to bag one.

Room Tip: Can be a bit noisy in the evening...but entertainment finishes about 10.45 so very queit after that

A 45 min - hour drive (depending on drop-offs) from the airport to the hotel in
the south west of the island which enabled us to see more of the island than just
the strip to Funchal showed what a hilly, no that's not the right word, fractured
landscape Madeira is. Slim A roads run along the south coast with 17 tunnels from Funchal
and numerous small roundabouts linking to coastal and inland towns. The following hotel review has been though several iterations as, over 7 days, thoughts have been refined and, hopefully, the distillation will enable a potential client to establish whether the Calheta Beach is for them:

Checkin at the hotel was swift and professional with minimum fuss or procedure other than a visual explanation of the contact less door key system and a request for signatures and passport photocopies. Room very clean but the safe did not work. Turns out that the room safe is extra 12 euros. Paid that but safe still did not work. Now it transpires that an engineer needs to be called - upshot was that the safe batteries needed replacing. Shouldn't a 4 star check this before a
new guest checks in? Pillows very soft but additional pillows supplied within 10 minutes of request to reception. King size bed nice and firm but covered with two single duvets which may suit some couples but could be disconcerting to others - Turning over during the night for a cuddle could result in exiting the duvet cocoon and finding your partner wrapped up in their own shroud.
On AI the included buffet was generous if uninspiring. Anodyne food to cater for multi nationalities, but loads of it - what else to expect? All the usual suspects for breakfast, including fizz. Lunch features a variety of salads, mains and deserts whilst dinner present more of a challenge with huge salad bar, hot speciality dishes and featured roast meats. There are some culinary gems in there. Sometimes slow to refill trays but they managed to serve lamb cutlets and beef steaks medium rare so they are forgiven. Food trays are labelled haphazardly but at least you can manage to avoid the fish dishes made with Panga.
The dining, bar and cleaning staff are all very helpful and speak excellent English ( some with a more refined BBC accent than some English people) and are to be commended. Comments in earlier reviews are not recognised by this reviewer: every member of staff encountered was kind, considerate and professional and an asset to the hotel.
Drinks on demand from 10 am to 10pm (another challenge) but only 'locally' produced brands. If you have children they only open the ice cream section for 1hr in the morning & 1hr in the afternoon. The wines are drinkable (espec the red and local gin when in the g&t is palatable). Cocktails of the day tend to be very sweet. Coffee is just as it should be and you can forget *bucks.
Sea view rooms at a premium (recommended) otherwise you get a view of the mountainside or the road which intersects the two halves of the hotel.
Good supermarket on site in the landward side of the development. Great place to stock up on premium drinks that are not on AI and you can then put in the room mini-bar to chill. Quaffable fizz for less than €5 a bottle and just the thing for the balcony later in the evening for a pre-dinner snifter.
Restaurant to the east of the hotel, 100m, has free wi-fi although the hotel has two terminals which are also free. Wi-fi available in the lobby area.
A shuttle bus to Funchal is available, for €18 (excellent driver) and represents good value for money although a party of 4 could do it cheaper with the registered taxi drivers who wait outside the hotel all the time.
MB tours were recommended by the hotel, booked with a phone call by
reception staff. The two Levada walks we did were diverse and interesting and, as a by product of getting to the destinations, showed how varied the island is. Be aware though that if you book a tour to the north east of the island you will be first pick up and spend the next 1.5 hrs picking up other clients (hence a good way to see the other hotels of Funchal etc)
Plastic roses on the dining tables.
Bathrooms (tired) do not match room / hotel decor
Gelateria in the port does wonderful artisan ices - try the strawberry and mint.
Stayed middle of May and we were practically the only Brits there.
If checking the weather sites before you go it seems that Calheta has its own micro climate and it can get breezy.
Not a lot else to do at this location so will suit some.

Room Tip: Sea view is worth the upgrade. Rooms to the west side may enjoy a stiff breeze.

On first impression this hotel needs updating. Furniture with wine stains on and dirty leg and base of table not cleaned in ages. Pillows in bedroom very poor and flat. Sun beds on balcony very old and tired. To use the safe you have to kneel on floor as its underneath cupboard and it kept breaking! Having said that the food and drinks are wonderful except the all inclusive drinks finish at 10pm. If you want and ice team that's not part of the all inclusive either!! Although on our first day it was??? The staff really need to sort that out I have never been on all inclusive where ice cream was not included! So I drank some more vodka instead.!!? Entertainment at night was pleasant. If your looking for somewhere away from shops peaceful quiet this is the place to be not much happening here at all unless you go out on trips. Even though weather was not that good we went February 2013 when we left we had a lovely relaxing holiday .

We found this hotel to be very comfortable & relaxing with good friendly service & well-run.
Its location is quite peaceful but the weather really was not...very windy at times with several wet days during our week. The evenings can be fairly chilly in March & you can get shrouded in fog (as we did driving our hire car inland one day).
We chose half board on 4 days when we had dinner in the buffet restaurant, which serves a good variety of International dishes - enjoyable food to suit most tastes.Food, wine & beer is good value here, the service friendly & efficient. The a la carte restaurant (Onda Azul) is excellent & is a welcome change from the large buffet restaurant, which although very good, can become a little like a "people factory" during very busy times.
There are a few other bars & restaurants nearby, including a very good fish restaurant. There was sufficient choice for us in Calheta but we were glad to be able to go further afield with our hire car, especially when the weather was disappointing & it was too cold to sit by the pool or swim. The outdoor pool is unheated but in a very pleasant setting;the indoor pool much warmer but small;it gets very crowded at times.
We really enjoyed the evening entertainment on most days & appreciated the way that it had been planned for a wide variety of tastes & ages - some of the performances professionally executed.Entertainment during the day (for families in particular) seemed a little sparse, although the sandy beach & sea bathing are a great asset.
We spent some time on our balcony, which had great views & got plenty of afternoon sun (on the few good days). It was certainly worth spending a little extra booking a room with a view!

This is a lovely hotel, 45 minutes from Funchal. Very clean and comfortably laid out with different seated areas throughout the hotel. Lovely welcome from the receptionist when she noticed it was my birthday and she sang Happy Birthday! The hotel also sent up a bottle of bubbly - nice touch thanks. The food was fairly good. Plenty of choice, you would not go hungry. Evening entertainment was enjoyable.
We booked this break through First Choice. The rep would not book a trip with less than 4 people. Only 4 came in this week! So with the help of a group of people namely, Andrea, John, Doris & Stuart we hired a minibus with a fabulous driver Nelson. This cost 120E between the 8 of us. First Choice would have cost us 40E each! He took us places that coaches couldn't go. His sense of humour and his English was great. He was so good we hired him another day with another 6 people, Sally, Malcolm, Eileen, Peter, Cathy and Frank. The people we met this week including Nelson really made this holiday because the weather certainly did not (rain, mist, wind) until the last day when the sun shone!
PS. You must have a ride in a wicker sledge in Funchal - the best.

I would recommend this hotel but be aware that is in a quiet area and you need transport of some kind to get out and about. The buses were few and far between - perhaps it is different in summer.

Room Tip: We were on the 5th floor (540). Nice spacious room. Great view of the sea. Near the roof terrace...

We had an excellent deal on price through hotelsbooked.com . The hotel is about 1/2 hour from Funchal and the return minibus was €17.50. There were a number of trips available from the hotel around the island and walks along the Levadas. Although there is not much in Calheta there are a few cafes and bars adjacent to the marina. There is a man made public sandy beach which is very well maintained. The Hotel has an outdoor and indoor pool. We were on half board and the selection at breakfast was very good which, surprisingly, included champagne. The buffet dinner was also very good. If you wanted to eat at the al la carte restaurant you were given a €13.00 voucher towards the cost. There was entertainment every evening. All the staff were very friendly and helpful.

All in all I would recommend this hotel and the perceived disadvantage of not being in Funchal is outweighed by the peaceful surroundings, close access to the sandy beach and the very good value for money.

Room Tip: A sea view room with balcony is worth the extra
