“A magnificent place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

Take the bus out from Sintra (a couple of euros return) and enjoy the superb ride out to Montserrat along the winding road through the woods. After you've paid your 6euros or so at the gate, take your time walking through the gardens - even those of us with minimal interest in plants and trees will enjoy the beautiful layout, waterfall, lake and lawns around the palace.
The palace is being restored and there is a good video presentation inside on the work that has been done so far. The magnificent central corridor with a feel of the Taj Mahal is gorgeously lit, showing off the elaborately-carved plasterwork and walls. The music room at one end has a calm feel and the library is likewise quiet and peaceful.
What struck me most powerfully were the proportions of this superb Romantic building - warm, human-sized and yet exuberant. It was indeed a majestic family home.
By the way, the coffee house nearby does a mean muffin!

“Great Palace and very promising after the improvements”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

This Palace is very beautiful outside with incredible architecture and the surrounding gardens make it even better. In the inside, the time I visited it (June 2012) there are nice rooms but the Palace was being improved, painted and refurbished, so it was a little incomplete at that time. The library was my favourite room and all of the rooms have delightful views over the gardens of the Parque de Monserrate.

“A most beautiuful house”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

Architecturally one of the most beautiful buildings we have ever seen. It sits amid a wonderful forest and has an incredible view. Could well rival any building in the greater Lisboa area!
