We have stayed in the Tivoli Sintra mid November 2006 ( low season) so we had the chance to have a very affordable room for the class of this hotel ( 75 eur / room if I remember well ) I think they even gave us a larger room becaus it was very spacious, we had a nice view with a balcony, the room was very fine and clean.

The hotel is perfectly located in the middle of the town, close to all sights of interest

The staff proved to be very gentle and helpfull, the restaurant staff was very kind as well and the food we had there was very fine compared to what we have been served in other locations in "tourist" restaurants across Portugal.

The weak point comes from that 2 churches that you can hear from inside the room, windows and curtains closed at night.
One is ringing every hours, and the other one is ringing every 15 minutes. ( at 15: ding / at 30: ding ding: at 45 : ding ding ding, at the hour : ding ding ding ding) of course one is playing after the other, so at midnight you have 12 + 4 bells rings, at 4h30 : 4 +2
( I had a lot of time to count as I coulnd sleep) try to get asleep in 15 minutes before the next bell ring... I tought It would stop during the night... but not.
The other thing was the minibar fridge wich was also making a lot of noise, but that was easy I disconnected it after 20 min.

So very nice hotels but not If you have a light sleep as I have...
better take your earplugs

  • Liked — It's central location and confort
  • Disliked — You can ear the churches bells during the hole night
  • Tips/Secrets: — bring earplugs !

This hotel although in a beautiful location is awful. The staff are rude and unhelpful and the reception area is extremely musty and dirty - avoid if possible!

Have been to Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra many times
This was the first time we decided to stay

We booked direct on the Tivoli website - dont use the website links on here as, in general they are a rip-off and the prices are not competitive. Got the room for 95 Euro's (Inc Breakfast for a Double with a great view and Balcony)

We got to the Hotel early, having spent a day in Cascais. The room was not quite ready at 12.45pm so we left our bags with the receptionist and went for a walk around

The hotel is central in Sintra, near the bars, eating places. From the Outside it looks awful, from the inside - from the restaurant and the lobby/drinks area the views over the valley to the sea and up to the Mountains are stunning. You should just walk in their to look at the views!

We got the room at 2pm (advertised check in time). Room small but fine, with great view and small balcony. Small double bed and fine bathroom. I would say that the rooms are fine for a short stay - nothing special, but at 95 Euro's it was fine for me/the wife

Sintra is great for seeing the Moors Castle (you can walk from Sintra - its steep and demanding, even for young people!!) and then there is Penna Palace. Views from Both are breathtaking and the reason why you come to Sintra

In the evening the place is very quiet and we were surprised at the lack of good restaurants - we looked but could not find a decent one - we ate outside hotel and the food was not so good - next time we will eat in the Hotel - maybe

Drinks were half price during the World Cup games - Even at full price the drinks would have been reasonably priced

Breakfast very good - lots of different stuff - and the views - stunning................

Overall service fine - we found the receptionist friendly - he booked our taxi back to the Airport - no problem

When we stay in Sintra again we will stay here but will do more research on Restaurants for the evening

We spent two nights at the Tivoli Sintra in mid-September. It is centrally located across the street from the National Palace & 2 blocks from where you catch the bus that takes you up the 'mountain' to the Moorish castle & the Pena Palace. We had a beautiful view from our spacious room with a balcony. The abundant breakfast buffet is served in a large room with a wonderful view. Free 24 hour internet access. Friendly, helpful staff. We booked it through the hotel website & would stay there again. However, one guest complained that the church bells kept him awake all night - they ring 4x/hour but we never heard them after we went to bed. So if you're a light sleeper, bring ear plugs. We were surprised that some of the restaurants in this touristy town don't take credit cards. There is an ATM on one of the side streets as well as in the tourist center. Everywhere else we went, restaurants took credit cards.

We drove around the bottom half of Portugal & thought the roadways were excellent & well marked. From Lisbon we went to Sintra, then Obidos, Alcobaca & Nazare before heading south to the Algarve where we divided our time between Travira & Salema (close to Sagres). En route back to Lisbon we spent a night in Evora. The Portuguese people were friendly & helpful; most service people speak at least some English.

September is a wonderful time to visit Portugal. The crowds are gone, but the weather is warm & the Atlantic is still swimmable. The beaches are gorgeous!

This hotel had been my second choice - but after we visited the Quinta where we made reservations, we declined to stay there and went looking for a backup. The Tivoli had 2 rooms for us at a much lower cost than the Quinta and a discount for staying 2 nights - - I think it came to about 87E a night. A bargain for a room with a balcony and beautiful view.

The hotel is much more charming than pictures. It has a lovely big lounge area - that I never saw anyone sit in. One problem might have been the bar at one end. A great feature - corner windows with a fantastic view down to the ocean - but trying to get someone to serve you there was a challenge. Twice we had to go to the front desk to tell them they had customers in the bar (the waiter was chatting there). But, we sure enjoyed it once we got service.

The front desk staff was either unbelieveably helpful or semi disinterested - depending on who you got. When we arrived, my friend was very sick and needed to see a doctor. The man who checked us in couldn't have done more - called all over town, convinced a doctor friend to come (at 8pm on a Friday night) and helped her to her room. He got us a parking space out front and was just overall incredible...best service in our 16 days in Spain/Portugal !!

He wasn't on duty Sat or Sun and those at the front dest weren't nearly as good...e.g. acted put out when I asked them to make a dinner reservation.

We had an average dinner at the hotel one night - beautiful spot for a diningroom - not busy. Food was better than I expected for being in a chain hotel. Breakfast was in the same place - huge selection of fruits that were fantastic (fresh) and cheeses/breads. I did feel like the wait staff was rushing us out - even when there weren't people waiting for a table.

Our room was very functional, nice bathrooms and it was lovely to have a little balcony. We left the door open at night and the air was beautiful and the lights on castles up the hill were great. Only downside was noise at about 3 am - party folks both night.

I agree with one of the other viewers that said that if this hotel was updated it could command double the rates. It has tons of potential to be awesome. Right now, this hotel is a great buy/excellent value for the money - VERY convenient, has parking, and has a lot of amenities (internet access, bar where you can get limited food serve all afternoon - the room service menu but convenient). It's views are fantastic and it was nice to have the balcony.

Lastly, for anyone thinking of doing Sintra - go for it. We loved it and wished we had 4-5 days to not only be a tourist doing the sites but to just hang out. It's definitely a resort town - lots of Brits while we were there - but we loved the energy of that. Once the tour buses from Lisbon pulled out at night we had the place to ourselves. Very good shopping and eating too. Great pastry shops !! Tons of photo opportunities!!!
