“Old tram that takes you to the beach”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2012

Well... The main problem is that it doesn't works most of the year, only during Summer. And the other problem is that it's only one tram. Although the ride from Sintra to Praia das Maças is amazing, you might quit waiting for it before it comes.

“Great little tram, get there early”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

This is a fun and scenic way to get to the beach from town. It only runs on weekends. Sat/Sun, at least, get there plenty early. We arrived about half an hour early and didn't get on. They only run every hour. The next Friday the crowd was much smaller and we had no problem.

“Great experience, a real gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Do try this little gem of transport. For 2 euros you are taken down to a beautiful beach with great restaurants.

“Fun thing to do!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2012

We took the tram from Sintra to Praia das Macas the last Saturday of August. It's definitely a different way to travel and makes for a pretty unique outing. We had attempted to go Friday but showed up to the tram stop for the 11:25 tram and the queue was already very long, plus by that point it was running behind schedule. We waited until 11:45 and then abandoned the idea for the next day. We showed up to the stop about 9:00 the next day for the 9:30 tram (first of the day) and there was already a lot of people queued up, but we did make it on. However, had we been much later, we wouldn't have. So just be prepared to allow some extra time. It's worth it though.

We spent a great day at the beach and also walked (perilously along the narrow road) to Azenhas do Mar. For the record, the waves are strong and the water is not exactly warm at Praia Das Macas, but the beach is great and the weather is hot so cooling off in the water is a welcomed activity.

We returned around 3:00 (again, the schedule was completely irrelevant by this time of day) and had to wait for a second tram, but we ate ice cream and watched the beach goers go by so it passed quickly. The tram seats about 48 so you can count the queue and get an idea if you will make it on or not. Although there are stops along the route, no one would have been able to get on as it filled up completely at the end points.

I found it a little hard to find info about the tram when I was planning our trip, but this site was helpful http://www.lisboncoastcottages.com/tram.asp?subMenu=2
