Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings. It was acquired and restored as a medieval ruin, also in keeping with the romantic taste of the period, by Ferdinand II. The Castle has an irregular plan and is composed of a double belt of walls. The internal wall presents a bailey, battlements and the reinforcement provided by five fortified towers. Inside, the cistern, fed by rainwater, and the Royal Tower are some the most interesting features.

“Spectacular views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

The view of the valley is amazing and the sight of the Pena Palace is worth it.
It is quite a hike up to it so hiring one of the electric buggy cars in the town is a good idea if not on a package tour.

“On top of the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

Me and my wife went on the VIII century Moorish Castle in Sintra, close to the Pena Palace in Septembre and it was amazing.
The view from the top of the towers is breath taking. the altitude is huge, if you enjoy walking by the hill, so this is the perfect place.
You should take warm clothes if you go at the winter because it is very windy and frrezing, even at the summer, when the temperature is high, at the top of the Castle you will find a fresh temperature.
We were lucky because we found a great Marocan fair wich made the visit get better.
This is a place to remember for ever.

“Sintra”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

Sintra is an historic town dating back to 8-9th century. At the peak of the hill there is a Palace built by Dom Ferdinando ll in the late 1800's (Castel dos Mouros) and is quite spectacular. I had read rave reviews on this but I thought it was just another palace. I liked the Monastery at Belem for 7Eu better.
From Lisbon you need to catch the train in the middle of town at Rossio to go to Sintra- 4Eu return and 35-40mins each way. The train lets you out at the village. You can then catch the bus (almost all the way) up the mountain for 5Eu return. You can then stop and explore the area if you want.
If you want to go up to the palace you need to pay for an entry ticket. You can walk the rest of the way to the castle but its a good brisk steep one. Entry tickets varys from 10-20 Euros per person and 2Eu extra if you want to take to minibus to the foot of the castle. No change out of 20Eu for the trip. Was it worth it? Big day of trains and buses and not cheap. I would rather have gone to the beach and checked Sintra out on the net....but I would say that of a lot of sight seeing destinations where there are crowds of other tourists.

“Spectacular!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

Simply amazing!! A day trip from Lisbon to Sintra and Moors’ Castle is an absolute must!! It’s a short train ride from Lisbon and very easy to navigate. Simply buy a roundtrip ticket from the Lisbon train station. Trains from Lisbon to Sintra run like every 20 to 30 minutes and there are no transfers. Once you arrive in Sintra simply follow the numerous posted signs to various locations. You HAVE to visit Moors’ Castle – the view is simply breathtaking and the castle itself is amazing and well maintained. A word of caution: have enough to drink, wear sensible footwear and be prepared to walk. This location is not wheelchair/stroller friendly. As for the castle, it can be a little treacherous in some spots so watch your children; the drop-off in some locations is unforgiving. If you still aren’t sold on a trip to Sintra and Moors’ Castle, visit their respective Wikipedia pages and do a Google image search of each location. You’ll be amazed and won’t want to miss it.

“Great place to visit - need 3 hrs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

I think that 3 hrs are needed to fully explore this site. There are many ruins to visit. But with one hours, one can walk the main castle walls.

Make sure that you bring plenty of water if you visit during the afternoon in the summer. The site can be quite foggy in the evening.
