Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings. It was acquired and restored as a medieval ruin, also in keeping with the romantic taste of the period, by Ferdinand II. The Castle has an irregular plan and is composed of a double belt of walls. The internal wall presents a bailey, battlements and the reinforcement provided by five fortified towers. Inside, the cistern, fed by rainwater, and the Royal Tower are some the most interesting features.

“Very interesting, stunning views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

A great place to visit especially with kids/teens. Not for the fainthearted as there are quite some, challenging, steps and heights.
You can just imagine the knights sitting on the watch towers protecting their land and coast. Very well organized. Parking can be a little bit tricky as there is limited space and lots of sites to visit on this one way road up the hill.

“Take the long walk up!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2013

Well worth the walk up the forest trail because when you get to the top you just can't believe the views or how high up you really are! It's only €7.50 entrance fee to the castle.
I recommend getting a taxi to the top or back down if you don't fancy the walk as its only €6.50 for 4-5 passengers, the bus however is €5 each round trip.

“Worth the hike, emphasis on hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

If you want the stunning views of Sintra without the opulence of the palaces, or you prefer your history as old as possible, or you love a good hike, this is the place.

I have to emphasize the hike. You certainly don't need to be some kind of advanced trailblazer - it's all paved trail and steps - but you do have to be prepared for a decent hike at the very least to get to the top. The view from the top is more than worth it. Good shoes are essential. Not much shade, so some kind of sun protection is a good idea, even if it's just a hat.

If you want to extend your hiking experience, you can hike to/from the city below. Again, it's all paved, but it's decently steep. We rode the bus up and the hiked all the way down to the city. Honestly we hiked down only because we got lost, but in the end I'm glad we did it. There are trail markers which are useful once you realize they're there. It's a pretty forest.

If you want to take the bus (434 line), you catch it just outside the Sintra train station (turn right immediately upon exiting the station, very short walk). The bus loops back to the train station, but it only travels one way. If you want to see this and Pena but want to avoid taking the loop twice, know that it stops here first. Pena is the following stop.

There was some construction in progress at the castle, though nothing that got in the way of the experience.

Facilities are pretty sparse - as far as I could tell, there is only a small gift shop where you buy admission, with some bathrooms next door.

“Amazing views!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Although it isn't quite as eccentric and unexpected as Pena Palace, the views from the castle are incredible!!

“Beautiful Castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

We visited only the Moors' Castle even though there were a lot of other surrounding attractions which would be perfect for a whole day out. The castle itself was amazing to see, although might not be great for people who are scared of heights. It is quite a climb along the walls of the castle but once you get to the castle keep all the way at the top the view of the surrounding cities is absolutely stunning. Definitely worth it. Great for people who like to walk as it is quite a hike to the castle. Bring good shoes!
