5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

We have stayed at Lawrence's Hotel a couple times now and can not wait to go back! The hotel is set in a gorgeous old manor house and has a fantastic atmosphere, it is furnished in an old fashioned style and all the rooms are unique and full of charm fitting in perfectly with the Sintra surrounding. There are several cosy common areas (lounges, a library, a bar) where you can relax and an excellent restaurant.

The staff are very customer service orientated and friendly.

The first time we stayed was winter and because it was low season and there were better rooms available we were upgraded to a gorgeous suite overlooking the woods.

We had such a great time and felt so comfortable here that we actually decided to have our wedding at Lawrence's!

We stayed two nights lovely room spacious comfortable although there was a funny smell in the bath. Very cozy to have a little fire in the small common area. Loved the ambiance and heritage feel. Excellent well priced food in the hotel diningroom with attentive staff very professional. Loved the fabulous pork. Very kind lady at reception on checkin. But we checked out very early and the Guy at the desk did not even try to assist me struggling with three bags. Which tends to lower a hotels rating. All in all though a lovely place

We stayed here for two days in December. The rainy weather probably contributed to the musty atmosphere. The staff were helpful and friendly but coudn't quite make up for the pervasive sense of neglect. The bizarre decor ( a bar lined with golf balls) didn't help. This hotel is definitely in need of an upgrade.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a distinct smell of mildew, though locals assure us this is normal in Sintra's h...

I made a reservation because of what I read on tripadvisor but this was my favorite place in so many years!

We booked for three nights but left after one. The room was tiny, furnished with junk that would not have fetched $50 at a flea market and the bed was as hard as a board. Mould grew between the bathroom tiles The so called terrace had no view and was furnished with junk. The whole place is filthy and smells of cats throughout and worse. The vaunted restaurant is simply dreadful. Mostly it is closed with unlaid tables,The few that are used are crowded into one windowless corner. Although we had booked to eat we took one look and ate else where. The ceiling of the restaurant is filthy. The waiter station was piled with rubbish. The breakfast is thrown on tables with little to no attempt at presentation. The waitresses "uniform" was old and stained. The hot food such as it was bacon egg, tomatoes was all piled into one hot dish and looked totally unappetising.
Before you enter this place check the state of the menu boards outside. Their condition should tell you what the rest of this place is like. A classic tourist rip off joint. Avoid.

Room Tip: Go elsewhere - but if you must stay here avoid the 5th floor - it is the attic with tiny rooms with...

We stayed at Lawrences for 3 nights for a magnificent wedding in Sintra and we loved it! If you are looking for a corporate modern hotel this is not the place for you but we loved the old-fashioned charm of Lawrences - Byron stayed here and we had dinner in the lovely dining room under his portrait! Our room was at the top of the hotel and called 'Bellavista' and indeed we had a magnificent view over the rooftops and views for miles. The room was long and narrow with the bed area through a little arch. It was very simple with wooden floors and slightly worn Antique furniture but lots of cupboards and a bathroom with natural light and lots of hot water. Also, very important for me, a nice size bath to relax in. We liked the hooks on the back of the door and the LARGE white bath towels and heated towel rail. There was a large flat screen television and you had free broadband etc downstairs in the charming sitting room as there was not a good signal in the top rooms. Breakfast was included in our rate and was incredibly good. Lots of really good fresh fruits, yoghurt, ham and cheeses and a variety of breads and croissants. Under a metal cover were well cooked scrambled eggs and delicious bacon so we were happy and it all tasted so fresh. We also had Sunday night supper in the candlle lit dining room which was delicious and with lots of choice. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming so we would be very happy to return to Lawrences - a winter weekend would be fun with log fires and wonderful walks around Sintra. A glass of white port before dinner!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel and not over the road which was noisy!
