“Wonderful pousada hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2014 via mobile

Last week we stayed in Pousada de Palmela with our two daughters (11 and 12 years). It was a marvelous experience. The location is exceptional: a former convent near Palmela castle on the top of a hill.
We had a room with a view over the Sado-river and atlantic ocean at one site and the hills of the arrabida naturepark at the other site. In combination with the historic setting, the atmosphere and the perfect service of the reception employees made our stay unforgettable.

We only stopped for lunch and did not stay at the pousada. Typically, I would not write a review, however, we traveled a distance to see the breathtaking view and have lunch. This was some of the worst food I have ever eaten in my life, definitely the worst meal in Portugal. I ordered a curry vegetable dish. The vegetables were undoubtedly leftover from the day before and literally fell apart in my mouth. The coconut milk had been watered down to the point that it barely tasted of coconut. It was flavorless and awful. My son ordered fish, which was tasteless and overcooked (also inedible). It was our last day and we regretted not stopping in Setubal instead. I don't even want to give this one star.

Besides this being a spectacular property with both history and 5 star suite, the staff was uncompromised. Hugo was both welcoming and helpful beyond our expectations. The suite was very roomy and comfortable, and we had views of the ocean, mountains and the the city of Setubal in the distance. If you want location, beauty, comfort and be treated like royalty than Pousada de Palmela is the right place. Thanks Hugo, Arturo and the rest of the staff for making our stay so memorable.

Room Tip: I would recommend the suite,(corner if available), quite a value.

This is a "historic" Pousada. Not all are. It's located on top of a high hill. No walking to city center if you'r over 50
Wide corridors around a central courtyard.
Interior corridors also wide.
Room comfortable with panoramic view of Setubal.
Bar and restaurant more expensive than downtown.
Good, discreet staff.
Low price for the quality in February but the heating could barely cope with the horrible weathe.

Room Tip: ask for the rooms overlooking the city and bay

I have stayed in many hotels and accomodations and this one is at top of my list! From the time we entered and were greeted, until the time we left we were treated like royalty. Fernanda was one of the nicest and most helpful receptionist I have ever come across and her English was perfect. We had our choice of rooms, as the hotel was almost empty, and we chose one overlooking the sea- which was stunning. The room was massive and the bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. Gorgeous bathroom with fantastic water pressure. We were offered breakfast (which I initially refused as I didn't know it was included) and the setting was stunning. The bar was lovely and not overpriced as most hotels are. I really cant say enough good about this place and dream of returning!

We stayed here for Christmas Eve and Christmas day. We had been traveling in the north of Portugal and bad weather sent us back south. The staff at the Pousada in Porto helped us find this pousada. If you love castles, you'll love this Pousada. The hotel is perched atop a hill and attached to a Moorish castle. The hotel is superb with lovely accommodations and wonderful staff. The castle is there for exploring at your leisure. We had a candle lit Chistmas dinner that we'll never forget. Room was large enough and very comfortable. Lovely bar and restaurant. I believe the lady we met at the front desk when we checked in was named Fernanda and she was wonderful and charming. We came here by chance, but we'd be more than happy to visit again. We'll never forget out stay here.

This was a nice stop, on the 2nd to last evening of our journey. Gorgeous old fortress style castle on top of a hill. Rooms were really cozy, and laid out easy to navigate and plug appliances. Staff were very helpful, and had an overall genuine care for any inquiries.

Not for those who want to explore, as to go out, you have to hike all the way down the hill a long ways, but if you want to enjoy the castle, and some history, for one night, it was very nice, and a welcome place for the night.

Restaurant was much better than the Pousada de Viseu, and had much more charm. Service much better here too.

Room Tip: Rooms are all different sizes depending on what part of the castle bend you are on. Every room is un...
