“Little gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

After scouring lots of websites and guide books for a hotel in Lisbon we came across the Lavra Guesthouse and location-wise it was a hands down winner! Close to the centre with a beautiful roof top terrace and stunning views. We were fortunate to get one of the newly refurbished rooms which was lovely (albeit basic). The staff were wonderful, friendly, attentive and did their utmost to ensure we had a good stay: Miriam, Pedro, Paolo and Oswaldo - Obrigada!
One thing I would say is to be wary of the local taxi drivers - they have a scam where they refuse to take you to a restaurant saying it is too dangerous / not good etc (even though it came highly recommended) and instead drive you to a restaurant they get commission from which is very, very expensive - we met several tourists who had been fooled by this. We were constanty being told by taxi drivers that Lisbon is dangerous and to always take a taxi - this is NOT true! Enjoy.

The hotel is located on on quiet street, which is great, just a short walk to Avenue da Liberadade, yes it is hilly. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and speak very good English and most helpful. You have to keep in mind that the hotel is in an old monastery, so it's old............Our room was for three on the 1st floor. The room itself was OK, the beds were very comfy, rather on the large size, clean sheets, there was a small closet available for hanging clothes. Now the bathroom was something else, it needs a good cleaning, the toilet really smelled, which we did complain about, they were to clean it again, but don't think it was, the shower had Hot water, but is very old. There is free internet in the lobby. Breakfast was nice with rolls, coffee and juice. You basicly get what you pay for!

It was a nice small guest house with a very gentle mixture of old house with modern (but not cold) design located almost in the very centre of the Lisbon at the resident part (not touristic). We stayed in a room big enough, simple and sophisticated design with comfortable bed. It had a small balcony with a view to the river from the Lavra hill. I did enjoy the place.

Nice, if I am right, just redecorated.
- clean rooms (we had room 303 on the third floor facing the street/church).
- nice bathroom
- good location in Baixa, though you need to know it is on top of Lavra hill
- lot of local restaurants around with good food & unforgettable atmosphere
- comfortable bed

The only disadvantage was luck of proper wardrobe, but was ok for 3 days.
I plan to return there in Spring.

P.S. didn't use breakfast service.

I booked this Guesthouse 3 months in advance, for a weeks stay in September 2010. I booked it as the pictures and reviews seemed great. I requested a room on the top floor with private bathroom and balcony as we read that these were the best rooms. To our horror when we arrived we were given a room on the top floor, which had a balcony which you could just about step out onto, with a view of a crane and a building site! There was no wardrobe in our room, only 4 coat hangers attached to the walls and an extremely small double bed, no tv and small bathroom. I can't believe that we were given this room to stay in for a week. When we complained they told us that the only room they had available was on the ground floor. This room was better as was bigger, but very dark with it being on the ground floor, had a wardrobe but no tv and no dressing table. We ended up checking out and going to a different hotel!

Nice hotel within walking distance of the major attractions in Lisbon. Our room on the third floor had a small balcony that allowed us to enjoy some late afternoon sunshine, very nice.

The service was good. The staff spoke many languages and were very helpful in letting us know where various attractions were. The room is very typical European (clean but very small.) We choose the cheapest room value and got a room with bed and bathroom only; no place to really put your bags other than the floor. We would suggest you ask for a room off the street and in their courtyard area which is nice and quiet.

We were 5 minutes from the hustle and bustle of the old streets of Lisbon. There is a walkway about 40 meters from the hotel. It is quite a climb at the end of the day when you are tired of walking the streets of Lisbon. Just down from the hotel are some local cafes and restaurants which are much cheaper than what you'll find in the tourist areas.

Internet is free and very quick in the hotel's lounge.
