“Quiet and charming”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

We enjoyed our four night stay in Aviz Hotel from Jan 16th 2014 Half a block from Marques de Pombal metro . We took the metro from the airport . Excellent !
The hotel was very clean , lovely room, beautiful hardwood floors in bedroom , comfortable bed !
Breakfast was in a lovely dining area with beautiful chairs and decorum. Lots of choice for breakfast with scrambled eggs and delicious bacon , fruits, croissants , cereals , etcetc,.
Good location to walk down Liberdade avenue and to other areas of the city .
Good value and will definately return to this Hotel ! Staff very friendly .

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

This hotel has a wonderfull old style charm with a cosy bar area and lobby, and comfortable rooms. The staff are excellent and even prior to our stay could not be more helpfull, organising transfers from the airport and helping with restaurant recommendations (we arrived the afternoon of Christmas Eve so our options were a little limited). A special thanks to Andre and the other gentleman at reception (sorry I did not get his name). All of my emails prior to our arrival were answered quickly and thoroughly even down to calling me by telephone the evening before our arrival to assure me it was not a problem to accomodate us for dinner on the 24th. They also spoke both English and French to a decent standard.
Location is excellent in a quiet street just off Avenida Liberdade and well served by public transport, buses and metro. A good tip from the hotel was to buy a pass for 6Euro per 24 hours you can buy for as many days as needed the pass costs just 50 cents (which they give you back if you return the pass) and it is valid on all forms of transport including the metro to and from the airport.
The dining room is beautifull with a very good standard of service with polite discrete waiters who are friendly and happy to help. Breakfast buffet had a good selection of hot and cold choices including of course the delicious custard tarts, almost impossible to eat just one! For Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the restaurant had a set menu for dinner which was superb and very reasonably priced at just 30 Euros for 3 courses for Chritmas Day and 35 Euros for 4 courses on Christmas Eve and they had no problem in giving me something different when I did not want to eat the baked octopus that was part of the menu although the other members of our party had it and told me it was delicious. We did not try the a la carte menu but I would imagine it was the same high standard.
All in all I would not hesitate to reccommend this hotel. A little constructive criticism to the hotel though, our room was well appointed and large (804) with a lovely terrace, and the cleanliness of the room itself could not be faulted, however the curtains need to be taken down and laundered they are a little grubby. The chairs on the terrace need to be replaced as they are very worn out. The AC unit makes some kind of motor noise even when it is switched off so should be looked at. Also the bed needs to be replaced the wooden frame squeeks with the slightest movement, I did ask them to look at it during our stay but as we were there over the Christmas holiday so I understand that there was little they coud do and these very minor points did not diminish the pleasure of our stay at this lovely hotel. I would without doubt stay at this hotel again if I return to Lisbon.

Room Tip: 804 is a lovely big room with a large terrace.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 9, 2013

Excellent 4 night stay at this hotel from 1st Dec 2013. Staff were friendly and helpful, service good and efficient, room spacious and well-appointed (room 802). Though quite small the hotel has a bit of character and style. Buffet breakfast was more than adequate for normal palettes. located adjacent to Liberade Ave it is about 15 minutes walk to centre with metro and bus stops close by. We used taxis freely as they were quite cheap to get to point to point. Lisbon is safe and we found people very helpful including the taxi drivers. My only suggestion for the hotel is that they could give a bit more information on its history, paintings and features. One other point, the hotel has a little rooftop sun terrace which was a gem for an afternoon aperitif. We would return to this hotel if and when we go back to Lisbon.

Room Tip: Rm 802 was good, quiet and spacious.

Dear Guest

Thank you for staying with us and for your nice feedback.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay in our hotel and in Lisbon.

Following your suggestion, which we appreciate, we take the opportunity to share some of the Hotel Aviz history, a name that will forever linger in the city of Lisbon.

The Hotel Aviz opened its doors in 1933 in the former Palacete Silva Graça, and for the three decades it was open, it was unquestionably the most important hotel in the capital and one of the few truly luxurious hotels to be found in Portugal at that time. Thanks to its status, it was the meeting place of choice for both Lisbon's high society, for whom it was the centre of their social lives, and the most prominent international figures that visited the city. Kings, statesmen, movie stars, spies and magnates, such as Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Maria Callas, Marcello Mastroianni, Charles Boyer, Josephine Baker, Amalia Rodrigues, the Queen Amelia, Eva Perón, the Duke of Windsor, the Count of Barcelona, King Carol of Romania, or Calouste Gulbenkian, who resided here between 1942 and 1955. As was to be expected, the food at the Aviz was on par with its reputation as a hotel, and the restaurant was even considered one of the most sumptuous in the world by Life magazine in the early '50s.

Since 2005 the Hotel AVIZ is in more recent building but the concept, the timeless style and hospitality, together with some of its original and priceless pieces of art have all been maintained, as well as the pleasure of welcoming you back to continue our history.

From the sunny heart of Lisbon and from our entire team we extend our warmest regards.

Loved the pretty location down a tree-lined, quiet side street but boy it's far from the action of the city. Good thing the metro/subway was close and that we also love to walk. My sister and I must have drawn the short straw because when we checked in we found that our agent had booked a room with only one double bed and no breakfast. The hotel said they didn't have any rooms with two beds--yet the whole time we were there, it didn't appear busy. Our hotel room was small, a bit worn and with a very uncomfortable mattress. The hair dryer barely blew any air. This caused my sister to find a hair salon. unfortunately the two different hair salons my sister tried were awful (one was recommended by the hotel). Loved that we had good cable TV for when we were in our small room.

The hotel's exterior and common areas like the lobby and halls are very beautiful. The reception desk staff's English wasn't very good but they at least tried as we also tried to speak Portuguese. The Bell Captain is old world charming. He made us feel like princesses.

Not sure I would stay here again but if I did, would definitely book direct. (And return to the restaurant located across the street!)

First of all thank you very much for staying with us. Thank you for choosing Hotel Aviz and for sharing your experience.

We are very happy that despite some of your impressions, overall, you have enjoyed your stay with us.

Effectively, as I confirmed, the reservation was made for a room with a queen size bed and no breakfast included. Regrettably, at that time, there was no availability of rooms with two beds.

Hotel Aviz is an elegant 4 star hotel, located in a quiet street in the center of Lisbon, and on your next visit to Lisbon you must try our Aviz Restaurant. It is an invaluable part of the Aviz experience, in a quiet and reserved atmosphere, where decoration evokes the memory of the pleasure of being at the dinner table.

It will be our pleasure to welcome you again in Hotel Aviz.

With best regards,

We stayed at the hotel in October. The hotel was easy to find we took the Aerobus but its more economical and the metro station is close to the hotel.
The room was neat and clean as was the bathroom it looked like the bathroom was fairly new.
The staff at reception helped when asked, but lacked warmth. The same was felt during the breakfast service. A smile never hurts anybody.
The breakfast was adequate. The custard tarts were lovely.
I would recommend the hotel. The star taken off mainly for customer service.

During our stay, booked by a german internet hotel reservation service, we had little to complain. The staff at the reception was always very helpful, they even offered breakfast bags for our last day, because we had to leave in very early morning. Instead of the booked Double room we were offered a suite, maybe because all other double rooms were already occupied, maybe because we were staying a whole week?
If fully booked, the breakfast room - serving as restaurant in the evening - is too small, so at 9:30 a.m. guests were queueing. The buffet was refilled each time something was missing, maybe the water for tea was not really hot, but the coffee (self service) was hight quality, and this way easy to get your personal mixture of coffee and hot milk. Chairs like thrones and with footstools under the table made you feel honoured.
Room service was efficient, although sometimes in the later afternoon, so when we were staying in the room from 14:30 to 15:30 they came back later. We should not complain about the offered upgrade to the suite, but two or three of the standard / table / wall lamps were not working (which we did not complain as there were enough other lamps).
The sauna / Turkish bath is small, but to be reserved in advance (included) as it will be reserved for you alone for one hour.

Many hotels that try to stay contemporary and cutting edge are usually such a let down and date so quickly.
Hotel Aviz is traditional in the best sense. It has a long standing reputation from which it can build.
Clean, efficient and quiet.
Originally I booked the hotel because it featured Portuguese custard tarts in a photo of its breakfast. These were certainly superb, delicate little morsels, most highly recommended.
