“wonderful staff, good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2012

My husband and I both celebrated birthdays at Aviz Hotel last weekend (February 2012) and were treated wonderfully by the staff. I had alerted the hotel prior to our arrival, expecting maybe a bottle of wine or some chocolates, and found that they upgraded us to a beautiful suite with a huge terrace. We were given a "welcome discount" of 10% at the hotel restaurant, and also enjoyed two glasses of complimentary wine with our meal. The service at the front desk and in the restaurant was exceptional - everyone we spoke to was really very sweet.

The decor is "old fashioned" as some have commented, but do keep in mind that this is intentional - they are very proud of the hotel's distinguished history, and have antique serving platters, porcelain, photos, menus, etc. on display. They still use the original silverware in the dining room, and the serving platters, etc. are classic and formal. Our suite was comfortable and huge, and the bathroom was modern and well-appointed.

I take issue with complaints about no internet - there is wireless in the lobby and bar area, but lack of wireless in rooms and dining area was a refreshing change for me. We ate and interacted with other guests in the dining room in a civilised manner, and were not surrounded by people fiddling on electronic gadgets for a welcome change. (not sure if my husband would agree, though, haha)

Only reason that I'm not giving it 5 out of 5 stars is because I think their heating vents might need a good cleaning: my husband's asthma was pretty bad at night, likely provoked by dust.

Room Tip: Bring your own hairdryer if it fits in your luggage. The one in the otherwise modern bathroom is on...

Modern hotel built to replace a hotel with great heritage. Despite being modern, the decor is rather old-fashioned. The hotel's location is quite a bit away from the old town and the main historical sites. The need to queue for breakfast is rather annoying - this is mainly due to not enough staff for clearing previously occupied tables.

We liked the situation of the hotel. Rooms are clean and comfortable. We found the decoration was a little bit old fashion but correct. Bathroom was pretty modern. People at reception were nice and friendly. Not too noisy. A correct place to stay, though ain't the best in this world !..but we would return there in the future!

I stayed in this hotel a few times. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the city away from noise but close to all transport including the airport. Service is great, rooms are impeccably clean, roomy and comfortable, tv offers a few English channels. Breakfast is good, a few choices to everyone's taste and its replenished 1/2 way through, so there were never a time that they had an empty tray. Most of the personnel speaks English, they're very friendly and extremely helpful. would definitely go back with pleasure.

Room Tip: I stayed in different rooms and they all were good, especially room 804 and 608

Within walking distance of Av Liberty, Tivoli Theatre, shops, restaurants etc. Hotel dining excellent, 3 courses with wine & drinks E120 for 3.Loved the signature suite Rm 404. 2 Bedrooms and a separate office, spacious marble bathroom. Slept really well. Very quiet. Public areas relatively small but pleasant. Underground parking. Staff efficient and helpful. Our son loved the Hard Rock Cafe within walking distance and the Gulbenkian Museum a E4 taxi ride. The Russian Ballet in the Tivoli Theatre was absolutely brilliant. Overall a great weekend spent in Lisbon.

Room Tip: Ensure you have a suite with 3 separate rooms, including the office as these are larger than the oth...

We took a short break between christmas and new year and chose to stay at the Aviz Hotel, and it was a good choice. It is easily accessible from the airport by airport bus #1 and about 10-15 mins easy walk from either Marques de Pombal or Avenida da Liberdade stops.

The hotel is on a side road towards the top of Avenida da Liberdade which is a very pleasant start to a stroll down into the town, wide and tree-lined and very affluent. Being tucked away means that traffic noise is very limited, though there was a new building going up on the same block while we were there and they were putting in some pilings - not all the time though.

The hotel is small by most standards. There are plenty of other hotels around this part of Lisbon all seeming much bigger, but there is a certain relaxed and friendly feel as you enter the Aviz rather than the large anonymous lobby. Checkin was quick and friendly and the staff were universally pleasant and helpful.

We booked the hotel using BA Avios points/miles so cannot really comment on the cost of the rooms. Our room (403) was smaller than expected and had a view of the rear walls of the hotel but we were hardly there in daylight so it mattered little. Though the room was small, it was immaculate as was the bathroom as indeed was every area of the hotel; lobby, bar, restaurant, corridors ...

I like a firm bed, but the bed was very firm indeed. I slept fine but if you like a soft enveloping bed you will really notice the difference. The room had everything you needed and air con for the cool winter or hot summer nights.

Breakfast was very good - it had a few hot items (bacon, scrambled eggs plus a vegetable) and a good selection of 'continental' breakfast items. I never left hungry.

I found little to complain about at the hotel - it would just be minor nit-picking. I never tried the wired or wifi connections though there is a PC in the lobby if you need to checkin for flights or whatever.

It is about 15-20 minutes pleasant stroll to the centre of Lisbon from the hotel. There are also plenty of busses.

One tip I would give is to get the Lisbon card if you are there for a few days. This gives free use of buses, trams and trains access to major monuments and discounts elsewhere. Buy it at the airport, then use the voucher from the accompanying book to get a discount on the airport to city hotel bus (and for the way back). You don't need to activate the pass itself until you are ready - maybe the next day? Another tip with the Lisbon card is that when you visit an attraction there is usually a queue - this is to pay. Walk to the front and show the Lisbon card and you'll be allowed to walk straight in. Saves loads of time.

I was sad to leave the hotel and Lisbon as we had a great break and I would happily go back to the Aviz hotel.

Excellent hotel. Super location within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, and historical and cultural sites. Our room, #802, was larger than most European hotel rooms I have endured and quite clean. Bed was very cozy and comfortable. As for the bathroom, well all I can say is, "Give me a bidet, and I'll follow you anywhere." The breakfast buffet was quite nice and had something for everyone. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Sylvia, at the front desk, was extremely gracious and went the extra mile with suggestions, directions, phone calls, transportation, etc.. Our trip to Lisbon was enhanced by our stay at Hotel Aviz.
