“Great Location; Nice Room”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

We stayed here for three nights on a brief trip to Lisbon. We reserved a prestige room (Room 311). It was a nice size, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was also a good size, with a claw foot tub, separate shower and toilet with bidet. Although the hotel is on a busy square, with the number 28E tram right out front, there was no street noise. The large balcony windows/french doors include two separate lawyers of doors which do a good job of insulating from street noise. Our room came with breakfast which was good and pleantiful. There is breakfast set up each morning with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, cheeses, cereal, meats, breads, etc. Plus, the kitchen will make other fresh egg dishes. The staff all around was very nice and accommodating and multilingual, so no communication issues. We arrived early and although our room was not ready, they seemed to do their best to get the room in order for an early check in. I have seen other reviewers complain about the lobby, and while true it is small, this is a boutique hotel, and I am not sure why anyone would come to Lisbon and hang out in the lobby -- especially when there is so much right outside your door. The location is superb, right in the Bairro Alto, within easy walking distance of many restaurants and shops as well as the Baixia and about a 15 Euro cab ride from the airport depending the the route the driver takes. The only minor negative is what other reviewers mention about the internet access. If you want to go on line from your room you need to call down to the lobby and have them give you a code for 1 hour (5 Euros) or 24 hrs (15 euros). The internet speed was okay, not great, but it would certainly be more convenient to simply put in your name and room number to go on line as is common in other establishments. We were told that if you have a computer with an ethernet connection they can bring you a cable and you can get on line directly for free. That obviously does not work for i-pads, so no dice for us. Also, from time to time we would get disconnected from the internet and have to retype the code, which was a bit annoying. This minor inconvenience was more than made up for by the rest of our stay at the hotel. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 311 is not directly on the square but rather on a side street from where you can see the square...

My husband and I (both well into our 50s!) enjoyed our stay at the Bairro Alto Hotel in every possible way. The staff was young, knowledgeable and eager to please, very helpful with restaurants and directions (and baggage, and taxis. . . ) and the hotel itself was beautiful, immaculate and the rooms well-appointed and unbelieveably quiet given the activity in the area during our stay. The hotel terrace bar, while quite crowded in the evening, was just great at sunset - comfortable with nice, attentive staff and no attempt to rush folks who wanted to linger over a glass of wine or a coffee. The location could not be better, lots of places within walking distance and easy to get taxis or public transportation for more challenging (uphill) distances. We intend to come back to Lisbon in the next couple of years, and Bairro Alto Hotel will be seeing us again. One small nit - having to pay by the hour for internet service (and book it in advance) is antiquated and not in keeping with the standards of the rest of the hotel.

Room Tip: We were in Room 301 and could not have been happier. Not much of a view but plenty of light, plenty...

We are just back from a 10 night stay and had an excellent experience. The staff really catered to us. We felt very pampered and we are over 45 plus. No age preference issues. We used the rooftop like a resort and spent a lot of time up there in the afternoons and late night after dinner. The view is awesome. Service is leisurely and unrushed. No pressure to turn tables which was a real treat for us coming from NYC, but if you're looking for "get it and go", you might not always be happy with that relaxed pace. Food and drinks were excellent.

Breakfasts downstairs were great too. Excellent, friendly service and first rate food. Platters of fresh papaya, mango, and melon cut with sashimi like precision. Kudos to whoever is doing that job! Warm pastries and bread, cheese, prosciutto, bacon, etc. Special orders were encouraged.

Do not overlook dinner, it's first rate too and again we were pampered. Special requests were encouraged and remembered at each visit. The chef suggested off menu dishes for us that fit our criteria and were wonderful. Don't miss the cod appetizer and the duck croquette with a glass of chilled white Port. Those are wonderful flavor memories now that will persist with us for a long time.

We stayed in a superior room, number 404, with a balcony overlooking a quiet side street with view of the water down the hill. Bed was very comfortable, you can have the pillows of your choice. We slept so well that we almost missed breakfast several times. Fresh fruit and water often appeared. Housekeeping was impeccable.

Location by the way is perfect. So much is nearby, literally outside the door. Know though that Lisbon is a city of hills. San Francisco is flat compared to Lisbon. Places that look close on the map might involve a very steep climb but no matter, taxis are cheap and plentiful. The man at the door will fetch one for you and we had zero problems finding a return ride.

All in all, a great stay!

A few suggestions:

1. Lower the lighting in the dining room at dinner to add a little more glamor.
2. Add a hand rail to the steps going up to the roof deck.

This hotel was in a nice central location in the heart of the shopping and dinning. It also has a beautiful roof top terrace, although the service up there was very very slow. They also let non-hotel guests up on the terrace so it is hard for the hotel guest to get a table. The lobby has no place to gather or sit.The hotel rooms are quite small and not somewhere you want to spend a lot of time, and the wood platform bed was not comfortable. As for the "20-something" aged staff, no one was there when we arrived, and we struggled just to get the hotel door open and our luggage through. The square is full of drug-dealers and pickpockets, and the police don't seem to care. The front deck staff upon check in was some what condescending, and so was the staff on the terrace. This place is more for the younger set, who don't care if it takes time for service, because they are just so happy to be in Portugal. As far-more experienced travelers, we care about service with a smile, not snide little commits.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a view of the square

We didn't like the area, but is close to every place in town, We walked everywhere except Belem. netx time we'll prefer to stay near marques. The main reason were the constant drug sellers that are in Chiado and baixa

but if you'e over 40-45+, then I believe the Four Seasons Ritz would be a better choice. I thought the Ritz was in a poor location but seeing it on tour made me realize, we would have been happier there. This hotel was geared for a younger crowd and while the young staff seemed eager to please, there were occasional comments that they may not have appreciated sounded snide to someone over 40 (or perhaps they were aware of it and really are aiming to attract the under 40 set). Unlike what we read in other reviews, there was no one to greet us when our cab arrived and we struggled to get the luggage into the hotel. The room smelled musty and was on the small side. The platform bed was not kind to those with back problems. We loved the rooftop terrace bar but it was always crowded and is not reserved for hotel guests. Moreover, the service was slow but the views are nice although I agree that they could get rid of the music. I didn't find the hotel noisy and it is in a great location if one wants lots of nightlife.

Loved this hotel. Very centrally located. Comfortable and well decorated rooms with large windows, great beds and crisp linens. our bathroom was terrific too....a big clawfoot tub, a separate shower and separate toilet cabinet...all beautifully tiled. Roof terrace has great views but be advised it can get crowded at times. We will be back next year for a few days...Lisbon is fun!
