“Nothing special”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2013

This Hotel was definitely in the most convenient spot in Lisbon, walking distance to great restaurants and shopping. The employees were extremely courteous and helpful. The restaurant was very cramped and the food was average. The rooftop restaurant was very pretty but the service was poor and the quality was also average. The internet service was not only costly but very inefficient. The rooms were clean but again, nothing special.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from Lisbon.
We are happy you have contributed with your very first review on Tripadvisor.

We are sorry the concept of boutique/charm hotel were not understood or presupposed. And most of all we regret we have not met all your expectations as a guest at the Bairro Alto Hotel.

Additionally, please always consider talking to the management while staying at the hotel, who maybe can assist you during your stay trying to overcome negative aspects of service, facilities, etc. This is actually the job of a hotel manager and management team of 5 star hotels.

Kind regards,

Jorge Cosme

Great assets: wonderful location in the very heart of the city, great staff. Always willing to help. Efficient and friendly. Nice decoration. Great roof top. Still disappointing on 3 aspects : 1/ my superior double room was small and the view was the opposite building wall. It makes you feel you're stifling a little bit. It lacks of space and air. 2/ Internet access is expensive, complicated to use and unreliable. it works very bad, for a hotel of this standard, it should be free of charge and work perfectly. 3/ the food on the roof top restaurant was very disappointing quality and quantity wise. And of course you cannot have a drink in a silent environment. You always have a horrible music background... One of the plagues of our world...

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback with the tripadvisor community.
For sure your comments are of great importance to other travellers.

Thank you so much for sharing the positive assets of this XVIII century building and hotel.
As far as the negative assets are concerned, we agree and we are so sorry regarding the wifi situation, we are on the merge of changing the current internet provider and hope this to be solved as soon as possible, as we have a ongoing contract.

The other situations appointed, we are sorry you did not liked the bedroom facing the XIX century Church "Nossa Senhora da Encarnação". Depending on availability we can always try to change to other superior bedrooms facing other streets and the main square itself.
As for the quality/ light meals served at the Terrace we normally have great comments from guests and visitors but I would like to express our sincere apologies for not reaching your expectations. Of course regarding music it is a matter of taste, as we have 5 huge playlists changed each 2 weeks.

Kind regards,

Jorge Cosme

It was my first trip to Lisboa so I wanted to stay somewhere special and this hotel came across. From the moment of my arrival, I was surprised by how magnificent the hotel and location was. You are in Bairro Alto, so what else would you want?? Super modern rooms, friendly staff, excellent breakfast, great value for the money I spent. Thank you for making my stay memorable back in 2008!

We stayed there for three nights. Location is superb. Rooms are clean. Stay on a higher floor so you can get a view. Check out the bar on the top floor. They could do something more with the breakfasts. Staff is courteous. I was happy

This small hotel is a gem located in the center of the old city of Lisbon. Friendly staff. Pleasant rooms that look out over a cobblestone square dedicated to a poet, not a General. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. If you are fortunate you will be there when the square is full of dancing locals. Tiles decorate nearby buildings. The roof terrace is a highlight. It is a great spot for a drink and a light dinner. It overlooks the rooftops of the nearby city and the Tagus River. My wife and I began our trip through Iberia at the Bairro Alto and when we returned a month later we were greeted by our names as we got out of the taxi. It is the place we would choose if we return to Lisbon.

My sister and I recently stayed at the Bairro Hotel for 3 nights. The hotel is bang in the middle of all the action so restaurants/ bars/ shops are in within walking distance. The hotel is stunning, we had a lovely room and the staff were really attentive and went out of their way to do anything for us. The rooftop bar is beautiful and has one of the best views of Lisbon. The only thing I would say is that the drinks there are quite expensive ( 12 euros for a cocktail) and also the bar is open to the public as well as guests. In my opinion I feel that guests should be able to book a table at the bar as there were several occasions when we were turned away and had an hours wait for a seat.

If you are looking for a good restaurants ask the guys on reception as they will direct you to the local restaurants not the tourist attractions ( in the square the locals grab you and try to drag you into their establishments) also it is defiantly worth doing a tour with a company called Viator ( we got a 3.5 hour tour with food, wine, coffee, cake and beer for £25) The tour guide was lovely and what should have been a 3 hour tour turned into 7 hours as we were all having such a fabulous time.

The nightlife can be slightly Magaluf style however if you venture out of Bairro you can visit some lovely little Portuguese family run restaurants .The staff also sing faro music for you which is such a great experience. I will not be returning to Lisbon as I want to visit other parts of Europe however this is certainly a trip I will never forget.

Room Tip: Just note that the rooms that state they have a balcony don't - you cant sit on them.

Well-maintained property with solicitous, professional staff at the intersection of Lisbon's Chiado, Bairro Alto, and Baixa neighborhoods. Great terrace bar with a view of the river, though this means one of the two small elevators can be jammed with revelers during the evenings, though that is somewhat counteracted by the quality of the caipirinhas at said terrace bar. Decent fitness room and good restaurant, but somewhat lacking in public/lobby space.
