“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

The Discovery monument is a must see and go to the top for spectacular views. Make sure you eat at the Pasteleria and have the local specialty. The coach museum was good as well. Take good walking shoes.

“A romantic tower”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Thanks to our kind relatives who reside in Lisbon, my husband and I will always remember Lisbon because of Belem Tower. Another World Heritage monument in Lisbon, we were impressed by this beautiful and romantic site. Pretty balconies on each floor, providing a wonderful view on all directions; a romantic view of the Tagus river , the Belem area and the Monument of Discoveries. The Manueline inspired architectural design is there, but one can also see a strong Venetian influence. On the very center of the Tower is a carved image of Our Lady of Safe-Homecoming, facing the river, whom the sailors prayed for protection and a safe voyage (reminded me of a similar image of Our Lady back home).
Going up to the summit of the tower, I got dizzy because of the narrow, spiral staircase. I felt claustrophobic because of the heavy human traffic going up and down the narrow spiral staircase. It’s good I brought with me a menthol balm that helped me recover quickly. Truly a memorable experience.

“So much to offer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

I came on a beautiful Sunday when nearly all museums in Lisboa are free and I could have been here the entire day if I didn't have further plans in the mid-afternoon. There are several museums in Belem, take your pick, all rated highly on Tripadvisor.

At least on the Sunday I visited, there were two very vibrant outdoor markets, one across from the Jeronimo Cathedral, showcasing an eclectic array of second hand goods, and one in the culture centre building which houses the Bernard Museum, showcasing some creative arts and crafts.

Other than the museums and the markets, Belem is great for a casual walk along the river, which also offers two large monuments, the Padrao and the Torre. Oh, and I missed this but I was told should have bought a pastry from the shop Pastes de Belem.
