The bewigged marquess sits on his monument in the middle of this enormous square. It's this sort of place that reminds one that rather than being the vibrant, modern, multicultural country it now is, Portugal was once the centre of a vast empire whose wealth came back to the mother country.
It's a centre for all, train, bus and traffic connections. It's not a place to sit and relax because of the traffic, but somewhere to come and marvel about a Lisbon that was in the past.
