“Relaxing retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2010

As beautiful as Lisbon is, it's incredibly difficult and exhausting to navigate, which only makes Solar do Castelo and its location up and away from the hustle and bustle all the more inviting. In fact, the highlight of our time in Lisbon was sipping vinho verde and beer in the hotel's calming Moorish courtyard. Several of the castle's peacocks like to visit during the day, so we also spent a good bit of time waiting for a loud take-off or landing.

The service here was outstanding. Everyone we spoke with was quick to volunteer their services--to make dinner reservations, to call a taxi, to deliver an iron and ironing board. And they also followed up to see if we needed anything else. The breakfast, including freshly squeezed juice, fruit, pastries, breads, meats and cheeses, was also a plus.

The hotel doesn't have a bar, but they do have a fully stocked honor bar. You can have reception deliver drinks to you or just make them yourself. For us, it was another nice touch that allowed us to feel right at home.

The only aspect to this hotel that might turn off some would be the location. If you want to be near nightlife and restaurants, then you'd be better off staying in the Baixa/Chiado or Bairro Alto or near Avenida Liberdade. In addition, be advised that many of the Alfama's streets are on steep inclines. Making the hike up takes stamina. Other options are a 5 euro cab ride from the city center or a bus from Praca de Figuera.

The best thing about the Solar do Castelo is the staff. Oh sure, the rooms are wonderful -- comfortable, airy and impeccably tidy -- but the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff really makes this place special.

I stayed here at the suggestion of my parents for a couple days at the end of a business trip. My shuttle driver had difficulty locating the hotel way up near Lisbon's castle, so after a sweaty walk with my luggage on twisty, turny streets, I was pretty beat -- but the front desk manager let me check in early and have a late breakfast there. The next day she offered to help me find a restaurant and made a reservation for me.

I loved the location of the hotel, too, and enjoyed getting lost on the narrow streets surrounding the castle... with one caveat. I unwittingly had my departure day on the Sunday of the annual St. Anthony's festival. Bad idea. Because there were still so many revellers in the street, the taxi the hotel had ordered for me couldn't get up to the hotel. So I had to hoof it down the hill and hail my own taxi. This wasn't pleasant, but obviously wouldn't happen on any other weekend of the year.

I'd love to come back to this hotel with my boyfriend. It's really quite a romantic place, particularly with the peacocks frolicking in the courtyard.

The hotel is in a very unique location of being right next to the St George castle in the Alfama area of Lisbon. The staff is friendly and helpful.

Arriving can be a problem since the taxi did not take us to the narrow street to reach the inn. One of us had to sit with the luggage and the other had to search for the inn and ask them to bring their cart to pick up the luggage. The distance is not much, but it is steep and the cobble stones make pulling the luggage very noisy.Since you are in a very heavy tourist spot, it can be embarassing pulling the luggage. The hotel did not inform us in advance about this problem.

The rooms are very small and the lights did not work in the room and the bedside table.
Even with these problems I would say that the hotel is charming and unusual. It only serves breakfast which is quite nice, the fresh juice and fruit salad is delicious and the very nice small courtyard they have in which peacocks sit on the wall and the pigeons fly in for a drink in the small fountain in the middle has a great ambience.

The Alfama area is busy during the day and very quiet in the evening.
The stay was unusual and a good experience.

The Solar do Castelo is small but beautifully formed.
The rooms are not over generous but that is a limitation caused by the age of the building.
There is nothing better than taking breakfast outside in the courtyard untroubled by city noise - though the neighbourhood peacocks aren't quiet!
Even though getting to and from the hotel requires short but hilly walks, I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Lisbon.

The decoration has been done very well and the hotel is charming. It is really located in the castle. The taxi driver did not know the street and did want to go to the hotel (we had to walk but you can avoid it if you insist:: the taxi can really drop you in front of the hotel).

I am used travelling and this hotel is clearyl overcharging its rooms. They are very small, and even if charming, not so comfortable. The castle is not the most quiet place here and you can even hear the noise of your neighbours.

A part from the fact you are paying a lot for a tiny room, you will enjoy an historical hotel well furbished and a few nice details: complimentary porto into each room, and wonderful peacocks flying and walking into the hotel.

This is a lovely friendly boutique hotel in a fantastic location in Lisbon. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, everything was of a very high standard. The location was perfect - far enough out of the centre of the city but close enough to walk to. Always jump on a tram to get back, it's easy! We couldn't recommend this hotel enough, great value great location, just great. By the way, about 20 metres from the hotel is a great little cafe but we only went in on the last day. What a pity.

Beautiful boutique hotel next to the St George castle in Lisbon. We booked at the last minute (the day we were arriving) and were given the last available room in the hotel, but the stay was still excellent. Even the smallest room in the hotel was lovely. Buffet breakfast is excellent, complete with champagne and Portuguese custard tarts. Staff are friendly and helpful.
