“Very good, but not a 5 star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

All in all, the hotel is "good" to "very good," in all categories.
Which means it wasn't "excellent" in any.

Room - on a smaller side, even with an upgrade. I understand standard rooms are even smaller.
Not tiny, especially by European standards, but deluxe rooms in 5-stars are typically bigger and better appointed.

Breakfast - OK, not too much variety. Again, no one went hungry...but I'd expect more.

Front desk staff very helpful, but very overworked.

But the value was good. I think we paid around $150/nt - plus the Marriott Gold upgrades, so we definitely got our money's worth.

This trip was the first time for using Marriott Autograph Collection (here and Santiago de Compostella, Spain) so weren't quite sure what to expect. We arrived a bit early and told room was not ready, but that we had been assigned "an interesting room". It was indeed - the room was pretty much all white with a separate sitting area from the bedroom, so it was quite spacious. All seemed quite new - bathroom well appointed with fancy toiletries. The hotel is very contemporary and trendy, located right on Liberdade within walking distance of many sights, Alfama, Baixa, riverfront, etc. Our room was located in the back building, away from Liberdade - there is a lovely cocktail/dining courtyard between the main front building and the back one - very pleasant for a relaxing drink.

All in all, it's a hard hotel to adequately describe as it is an unusual design, but we did enjoy the stay. A full buffet breakfast was provided. Front desk staff was quite helpful in directions and advice. Plus they made arrangements for cab back to airport at 15 euros and included that on our room bill.

We only stayed for one night but were so impressed by the front desk service, especially Claudia. You didn't have to ask for anything, it was offered - maps, directions, printing of boarding passes. Rooms were spacious and updated. And it is in a great location for walking

The design was second to none, the staff friendly, food great - but most of all, I loved the design of the hotel and the rooms. So creative! I'd definitely stay here again. Be sure to have a meal (besides breakfast) in the hotel restaurant - the food is top class. The only thing that was a bit annoying was that there was no hot water cooker in the room. So, you had to go down to the restaurant every time you wanted a cup of tea or coffee.

All agree that the location is superb, the breakfast is great, the beds are great and the rooms and lobby are trendy. But I think that this hotel needs to upgrade its housekeeping staff and perhaps its front desk. All were pleasant, to be sure. But there was uncertainty whether we were Marriott Gold or not, there were difficulties in obtaining additional tissues, there was confusion about whether we had reserved a car for a sintra tour for thursday or for saturday, some days we had a floor mat for the bath and some days we did not, all of which would not happen in a first rate hotel.

This hotel has a great location it was very nearby to everything we wanted to see and do. We could walk to most things our a train station was very near. You would not even know it a hotel by just walking by.. Our room was upgraded by the very efficient receptionist J. Hotel was quiet most of the time but they did have a few fashion week events going on when we there. The restaurant had a great farm to table style setting which I thought was cute. We wood recommend this hotel to others

Stayed here for two nights on a trip to Lisbon. We chose it as it was a Marriott and we wanted to earn points, but also because it didn’t look like the classic Marriott that could be any city, in any country. It’s one of their new Autograph collection and you’d never have known it was Marriott at all! It’s funky and modern and kept very clean. We both liked it!

The pictures on the website do accurately reflect it’s style and what it looks like. Front desk team were extremely friendly and very helpful and often would chat with you to find out what you were planning to do that day or see what you’d done on the way back! They didn’t hide behind the desk, which I thought was nice. Francisco was charming.

Breakfast was lovely and something slightly different – always a bonus when you travel a lot! It felt very low key and relaxed.

The rooms are modern and trendy in style. Bed large and very comfortable. We had one of the darker painted rooms, which was very spacious, with a really high ceiling and a lovely view to the front of the main tree lined avenue – where we heard no road noise to disturb us - they must be thick windows. In hindsight I think I’d have preferred one of the white rooms, as they would be brighter. My only alteration to the darker painted rooms would be a glitzy crystal chandelier to match the décor (something like the ones from downstairs to make the room a bit brighter!). We did have a very leaky shower, but as only one other recent guest mentioned this on trip advisor I think this was just an issue with our one (they perhaps were in the same room!). Our room had shower only. These comments are why I’ve given it a very good rating, not excellent. The safe in the room was large and someone else also pointed out the power goes off when the room key is removed.

It cost 20 euros by taxi to get there from the airport and only 12 to get back. They do have parking at the hotel in the rear of the building. The road layout outside the hotel is a little silly for anyone planning on driving there, as the traffic direction on the single lane side streets that run parallel to the main avenue, doesn’t run either up or down the avenue, but changes direction at difference sections, so I was glad we got a taxi! We did quite a loop to get back to where we wanted to be. The taxi driver said it was crazy layout!

The hotel is extremely well located. It was a safe area, and walking distance from the railway station (Rossio), the metro (‘Avenida’ is almost opposite the hotel on blue line / the red line takes you to the airport, change at ‘S. Sebastiao’ three stops up on blue line for the red line). It was easy access to the Alfama area, the waterfront, the designer shopping area (Chiado) and the Bairro Alto area and lots of restaurants. We bought a daily pass tram ticket at the metro station for 6 euros each, which was great for hopping on and off the trams and saved a fortune. Lisbon has a lot of steep hills, and the pavements/sidewalks are all made up of shiny and slightly uneven 2” x 2” mosaic tiles - comfy shoes essential. It’s a great city to walk round. Lots to do & see.

Room Tip: If you like brighter light in a bedroom, ask if they can put you in a white room.
