“go and eat there if you're in Lisbon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

We had their 20 course tasting menu and it was worth it for the presentation and the varied tastes.
The friendly and non-pretentious staff also made a huge difference. they had a friendly yet knowledgeable sommelier who was able to advise us on the wine choices yet not feel imposing.
Food is what one would expect for a Michelin establishment but for us it's the non-pretentious staff and comfortable atmosphere that made the difference.
Any Michelin establishment can feel proud of themselves and have an altitude to match but Belcanto was very friendly and accomodating - the staff seem just happy that we enjoyed ourselves and their food, which is a refreshing change from some other Michelin establishments that we've been to,

“Kind of disappointing...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2013

We were very excited to try Belcanto given that it's a Michelin star restaurant in Lisbon. We made reservations for our last evening there. The service, wine list and presentation of the food were impeccable. The food however not so much. I've been to a number of Michelin star restaurants in the states including the French Laundry. The friend I was traveling with is also a foodie. And honestly we were underwhelmed by dishes. It was a let down considering how much money we were spending and after reading all these great reviews. We both did the first tasting which has over a dozen dishes including all the amuse bouches (which were actually interesting and inventive). I also requested the rabbit with foie gras off the other tasting menu as an a la carte dish. The chef was gracious enough to do that for us. The not so great dishes for us included the bivalves in the seashell with foam. It was overly fishy and bland. The mackerel was also very fishy, we only ate a portion of it and couldn't stomach the rest. My only favorite dish was the golden egg which was soft boiled hen's egg with gold foil and truffles. Amazing. It's too bad the rest wasn't.
