“Disappointing”

Vila Gale Opera Hotel

3 of 5 stars
Berlin, Germany

My girlfriend and I had a fabulous experience at the Vila Galé Albacora hotel in Tavira, Algarve (also a 4-star) - so without hesitation we booked the Opera in Lisbon for a spontaneous 5-day trip. Unfortunately, our expectations were way too high - this Vila Galé has a lot to wish for.

Rooms: Admittedly, the hotel was part of a very affordable package - so maybe the Opera has better rooms than the one, we got.

Another reviewer wrote of a room smelling of toilet - well we got one of those too, at first. After mentioning it, we got another room without any fuzz. The new one was pretty worn down with cracks in the walls, chipped off spots on the furniture and dark shadows in the bath tub. The view from the 6th floor was unspectacular, outside it's just old, abandoned industry buildings.

Some people have complained, that the noise of the bridge directly above is unbearable. We hardly even noticed it even with the window open at night (the room was not facing the bridge, though!)

Staff: Nice but somehow confused and overburdened, not very good at english

Breakfast: a lot of the reviewers here praise the great breakfast. To me it was no more than average. No portuguese specialties or anything out of the ordinary, just one sort of cheese, one sort of ham, sausage, etc. Coffee was horrible.

Amenities: Opera seems to want to score on some of these. Internet use was pricy (5 € for an hour), use of a safe: 3 € per night. I think using the pool costs more than 7 €.

Location: 5 km from the center means that you either have to get to know the public transport system (a bit complicated in terms of tickets) or take a taxi (affordable). However, the location is OK, if you want to go to the seaside, like we did - it's near the ferries and trains in Belem, that go to the coast.

Overall: I know that hotel classification works differently in some countries than others - but to my standards, this one doesn't deserve the 4th star. I'm not going here again. It's not really bad, but it's not really good either.

“Nice hotel but the staff arent very friendly”

Vila Gale Opera Hotel

Jul 22, 2008

We stayed for 3 nights at the Hotel Vila Gale Opera and thought the hotel was really nice. The rooms are spacious, tidy, comfortable and I had no problem getting a good night's sleep. The breakfast buffet is also pretty decent with a fairly large range of food available. The hotel is located a few kms from the town centre but the trams and buses to bring you to town run fairly regularly. We didnt eat in the hotel restaurant or use the leisure facilities so I can't comment on either of those.

Our main objection to the hotel was some of the staff members. Pretty unfriendly to say the least. A typical exchange would go something like:

Me: Can I have some ice please?
Barman: (Says nothing, brings me a bag of ice)
Me: Thank you
Barman: (Mute)

I found some of the reception staff to be equally unfriendly. When I checked out the only words spoken to me were "Did you take anything from the minibar?" ... no mention of whether I enjoyed my stay or a thank you or goodbye. The basic decency you normally expect from people, especially those in the hospitality industry. When we asked the reception staff for information about getting around Lisbon it was like pulling teeth. They gave us the bare minimum of information. The staff are functional but that's all.

So overall, really nice hotel, decent location, shame about the staff but if you have thick skin then this shouldn't be a problem.

“Good stuff!”

So this hotel does exactly what it says on the tin! It is very clean as there is always cleaning staff on hand, the reception staff were very polite and gave us really good recommendations on places to eat and how to get around.
If you are into opera then the hotel has a few performances on weekend evenings and during the week there was an English singer accompanied by a piano to entertain people.
The whole hotel has a opera theme - the pictures, decor etc. I would say this is more of an adult hotel, not very ideal for those with young children.
The breakfast buffet was really good - a selection of breads, wide variety of fruit, cereals, fried breakfast, juices etc.
They do charge for the use of the swimming pool - it was 7.50 euros for the use of the gym and pool for the day. Although this included any fitness classes you wanted to participate in.
The only let down of the hotel was the fact that it is not possible to get a room with the view of the bridge or Lisbon, or the Christo Rei. The way in which they have built the hotel does not accommodate for these views and rather the rooms are under the bridge. When we arrived we did ask to change rooms because of our view, and the reception staff kindly showed us the different rooms available. The sheer noise from the room closest to the bridge was unbelievable. It sounded like haunted ghosts! And that is without the train that travels across it running past every 15 minutes. The room we had was very clean, had a great bathroom and although the view was not amazing, it was absolutely above average. If you are visiting Lisbon to sight-see then you will not be spending much time in the room anyway!
All the rooms are non-smoking as well.
Across the road is the docks. It is a strip of bars and restaurants generally catered towards tourists. The only problem is that the road is made up of two dual carriage ways and you cannot cross the road directly. You have to take a 5 minute walk down the road and cross at a foot bridge and walk back up the road. A little scary late at night.
Overall the hotel is highly recommended.
Enjoy!

“Great Hotel!!!!”

Vila Gale Opera Hotel

Have just come back from a 4 day break with hubby and a 15 month baby. The hotel could not do enough for us, even gave us free milk for the little one's bottle.
The lobby was beautiful and the restuarant was fab!! Try the buffett, it's great value for money.
The hotel is not close to the centre and we did need to take taxis everywhere as we had a pram with us, but as taxis in Lisbon were quite cheap it was not a major problem.
i would reccomend an evening at the docks close to the hotel. There are some great bars and restuarants there and the seafood was delicious.
Only moan about Lisbon is the fact that the people are not very friendly and it can be difficult to communicate with people. Also, don't go to Freeport, the shopping centre in Alcochete, it's not worth it!! Better to go to Amoreiras in the centre of Lisbon, better value, close and you can do it as part of the open tour hop on/off bus.
Also, the Tower of Belem is a must see.
