“Great food, local ambience, friendly staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2014

My husband and I stumbled upon Baleal in August 2012, after a day of wandering around Lisbon during our honeymoon. We were dying of heat and ducked into the aquarium-lined entry, which leads into a large, cool room with a raw bar and a number of tables. Baleal has overhead lighting and no tablecloths, and it is definitely not violins and roses romantic-- but that is what makes it absolutely fabulous! This is an old-school beer, wine, and seafood joint! It will remind you of the good old days! It is also clean and well-maintained, and it is clear that the management and staff take pride in what they do.

The seafood we have had at Baleal is absolutely the best raw bar cuisine we have had in Portugal. The sapateira (steamed and cooled spider crab partially deconstructed and served with a bisque dip and toast) is highly recommended. The ameijoas (small clams simmered in herb broth) are killer. If you're not sure what you want or how much to order, the staff is very helpful and honest in choosing a tasty, appropriately sized selection for your party (you can certainly get by with English if you need to, though this is definitely not a tourist joint).

We now go back to Baleal whenever we are in Lisbon!

“good food - poor atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2014

This is a traditional place in Lisbon. The ambient is not what you want for a romantic dinner. The food, mainly seafood, is very good (fresh fish) but the place lacks atmosphere. The waiters (all male) are a bit rude. So my advice is: if you are out for some good seafood and do not care the service or the ambient, then this is the place for you. Otherwise...

“No fuss or frills - just really good seafood and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2014

My husband spotted this place on our first day in Lisbon as we were walking towards the town square. Too bad we didn't bother to write down the name of the restaurant and only remembered the fish tanks at its storefront. I don't remember how but we managed to find it again a few days later. LUCKY US! We ordered a hefty Dungeness crab, clams in a white wine sauce, and seafood rice. The seafood rice is a MUST. My husband (a seafood enthusiast) could not stop raving about this dish. He went as far to state that this was definitely on his top 3 list of the best meals he's ever had. Strong statement and I can vouch for his foodie credentials.

Atmosphere is very simple with a full bar and a decently sized dining area. Quiet enough where you can enjoy a conversation but you won't have people listening in. Wait staff is made up of older gentlemen who were very knowledgeable and polite in assisting your order.

“Excellent food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2014

We read about this place in one of the specialist guide books. It said 'it does not look much from the outside but the food is excellent and good value' This was absolutely correct.
When we walked in at 7.30pm we were the only ones there and we were a bit worried that we had made a mistake. By 8.30pm the place was very busy with locals and tourists of all nationalities. My wife had an enormous fresh Sole, my son had the best steak mignon he has ever had and I had the Cod which was served the old fashioned 'silver service' way by the waiter.
As with all Lisbon restaurants they brought starter dishes which we did not order or touch and these we removed at our request.

“Delicious seafood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

We had no idea there was so much room just from looking outside. There is a small hallway that leads to a big dining area. There is another dining area for large parties in the back as well! There are plenty of tables for 2 as well. I saw a large family put 4 of them together. A long bar too. As usual you will receive starters for which you must pay so put them to the side if they are not to your liking. The bread was sealed which was different than many other restaurants - at least you will know it hasn't been manhandled. We ate around 1500 (3pm) so the restaurant's lunch crowd was winding down I believe.

We ordered the cod balls to start which were typical and fresh - crispy outside and mashed potato type fish inside. Which we waited for our entrees, a server offered us fresh barnacles that he was taking to the bar - very kind gesture! I guess where America has peanuts, PT has barnacles?

Grilled salmon was very tasty and comes with julienned beets and carrots plus small boiled potatoes and delicious sauteed greens (I think a mix of chopped green beans and soy beans).

Not surprisingly, the kababs at a seafood restaurant are gross. Expect soggy bacon and mostly pork. At a seafood restaurant, only get seafood. That goes without saying but my husband and the reviewers below just don't get it. They messed up our bill but corrected it in no time.
