When someone arrives to Lisbon, where they go? The usual "tourist attractions", of course: Jeronimos, Torre de Belem, Castelo de São Jorge, Alfama, Bairro Alto, Parque das Nações and Oceanário, 28 Tramway, etc.
Why not go, shal I call it, "upstairs"?
Up from Marquês de Pombal roundabout to "New Avenues".
Get Saldanha, down Avenida 5 de Outubro (paralel to Avenida da República), turn left to Praça de Espanha, and you find yourself just in front of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, the REAL Department of Culture in Portugal. Not speaking the daily events (exhibits, concerts, lectures), you can walk on the magnificent gardens drawn by portuguese best landscape arthitect , Ribeiro Telles, anda find two of the best world museums of art which shows pieces from Ancient Egypt to modern artists. The Gulbenkian Museum shows paintings and sculptures from 3.000 B.C. to XX century artists.
The Museum of Modern Art shows the work of contemporary artists, mainly portuguese.
You'll be fascinated and amazed.
So, when arriving in Lisbon, don´t miss this tip.
