“Portugal`s Pioneering Heroes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

The permanent structure to honor the heroes who pioneered the discoveries of new lands in the world was inaugurated in 1960 in Belem,Lisbon the completion of 500 years of Henry the navigator. The sculpture has Henry the navigator leading holding the prow of the ship which has 30 other famous people involved in the discoveries,Vasco-da-Gama,Cabral-discoverer of Brazil,Magellan the first navigator who circumnavigated the world, king Afonso v,other explorers, writer, missionaries, mathematician, map maker & other key figures from that period.

One can go inside the monument where there is a museum exhibition halls various rooms spread over 7 floors. At the very top accessible by an elevator is an expansive terrace which offers a breath taking view of Belem,Tagus river & the roof tops of many buildings.

It was a wonderful monument built in a lovely location of Belem which was also associated with it being the site from where most of the discoveries were launched including Vasdco-da-Gama`s voyage to India & Columbus landing here after his discovery of the Americas.Make a visit to this inspiring & lovely site.

“Magnificent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2014

This attraction was on my list of must sees and we were not disappointed. It is magnificent. My only regret is that we didn't have time to go up on top and see the view. The detail of the explorers & others adoring the monument is impressive. Originally built to honour Henry the Navigator, the 15th C Portuguese explorer for the 1940's World Exhibition. What we see today is a replica of that monument. It stands 50 meters high overlooking the Belem Marina. Don't miss this attraction on your stay in Lisbon.

“Stunning monument....and lovely location.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2014

Definitely worth the visit, along with the nearby Torre de Belem. Nicely situation alongside the Tagus river with lovely walks and cafes close by. The Monument is beautifully and very evocative...we did not have time to go inside but I am sure the views were magnificent as it is quite high!
You can get to this part of Lisbon by Bus as it is quite a way from the centre. We took a taxi and it cost about 10 euros including tip...

“Just a view. But WHAT a view!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2014

The outside of the Discoveries monument is worth seeing. Sadly it was all covered in scaffolding when we visited, but I have seen it before :-)
The mosaic (a world map) outside the front is also worth noting ahead of going up the monument.
You can pay a small fee (I think it was about €3 each) to take the elevator almost to the top of the monument (about a dozen stairs to go at the top) or if you are stark staring mad you can climb the stairs for nothing.
This attraction is all about the view. You get to the top, you can see all of Belem (including the Jeronimos Monastery and the Torre de Belem), you get a great perspective on the mosaic below, and you can see the higher parts of Lisbon and the bridge. There's nothing much further of interest, but it's well worth the trip for the view alone.
