Like most churches in Lisbon it looks impressive from the outside. It looks majestic from other parts of the city and the inside is peaceful. But, what you really want to do is to go up to the roof.
Closer to the sky, closer to God, right?
For that you need to go the little ticket office/café to the side. For €5, you can see what lies behind. On this, my fifth trip to the Church I discovered the enormous underground cisterns which were filled with water.
But we were really going UP! Through floors of beautiful blue and white tiles. There are so many, it feels just like Tile Disneyland. They are spectacular. But, you will eventually get all tiled out. After walking up several staircases and walking up and down a few corridors, we get up to the roof. There are spectacular 360 degree views of Lisbon and you get a great "aerial view" of the National Pantheon which lies just below with the cobalt blue of the Tagus River just behind.
It's usually very quiet up there with few people at any time... so a sneaky picnic would be lovely. Even if it is a church. For me, these are the best views in Lisbon and I always take people here when I come to Lisbon.
