“Church and Monastery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

Beautful Renaissance-style church. Also very worth visiting is the neighbouring monastery (atmospheric cloisters, tombs of the Portuguese kings, tiles depecting events in Portuguese history and - particularly impressive - La Fontaine's fables, impressive tower views); 4 Euros adult admission.

“Visit the cistern + view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

If you are in the neighborhood and perhaps not too interested in the church nor the pantheon could be worthanyway to pay a visit to the cistern and water collect system build into the monastry. We were there on a rainy day, perfect to follow the water stream down from vaults, floors, drainpipes and yard into the XVI century cistern. Fascinating. 5E fee.

“Don't miss this”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2012

We stumbled upon this attraction and boy were we glad to have done so.

The entrance fee was just a few euros (4 or 5 pp, I think) and we could have spent longer than the 2 hours we did. Beautiful displays of bishops robes, ornaments and other church regalia are combined with excellent cloisters and other masonary feats. There's a long history of the Portugese royal family's association with many being buried here. Take the long climb to the roof top where you can lose at least half an hour gazing at the fantastic views of Lisbon and snapping photos that will impress! On a sunny day this is a superb experience. You can take the No.28 tram almost to the front door, or walk over in about 10-15 minutes if you're visiting the Sao Jorge Castle nearby. While we saw a number of ramps and facilities those who have trouble with stairs are going to miss out on the Lisbon views.

“La Fontaine’s fables in tiles”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

Igreja da Sao Vicente de Fora is a tremendous white building with three arches and statues decorating the façade. The inside impresses with more statues, a great altarpiece, sunlit cloisters and galleries with tiled walls. You see tiles everywhere, very beautiful. On one of the upper floors there are tiled panels relating La Fontaine’s fables, where pictures are accompanied with verbalized stories. You can climb to the roof to have a picture of the monastery from a different angle, and to enjoy breathtaking views of the city and Tejo river. Don’t miss fantastic banisters (see the pictures).
