If you are a lover of all things maritime, then this is the museum for you.. Huge displays of ships, and their contents, through the ages...A very nice and well stocked tourist shop...

“For serious maritime enthusiasts - and children”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Located right at the harbor near Belem Tower, the sailboat harbor, and not far from a cruise terminal pier. Best to go with a tour guide to hear nuances of history that are not immediately apparent. The entrance lobby historical map is outstanding!

Models are crafted works of art.... both the models and the ship museum across the walkway near the souvenir shop really are fascinating, as well as nicely displayed. An elevated walkway runs the length of the huge display gallery, and makes for an interesting vantage point for studying these ancient vessels.

An enjoyable museum that covers much of the history behind Portugal. Cool boats and models, with a great layout.

“Just OK unless you are a boat buff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013 via mobile

I thought the early explorer travels were fascinating, but 1/3 of the way through I thought the ship models were a bit much. In fairness, my travel partner who was in the navy LOVED it. He would have given it 5 stars and one of his top 5 attractions in Portugal in the past 8 days.
