We just left Palacio Belmonte. This is not a typical high end hotel. You are staying in an impeccably restored mansion. The public areas are gorgeous and they are all available for your daily use. We chose to have breakfast every morning served in a large sitting room adorned with ancient Portuguese tiles. The breakfasts were perfect--eggs, ham, fresh fruit, fresh squeezed juice, fresh fruit, croissants.
Without asking, we were upgraded to a large, lovely room. My guess is you will never stay in a hotel room with such beautiful antiques. As an example, the doors to one of the cabinets were doors from an old chapel that were painted with religious scenes. They appeared to be ancient.
Owner and hostess Maria was a delight. She could not do enough to assist us. She truly wanted our stay to be special, and it was. She treated us as if we were old friends. Her assistant Nelson was charming and also made us feel very welcome.
We cancelled a reservation at a five star hotel in Baixa and were so glad we did. We paid a little more, but it was money well spent. As we left this morning we thought we may never stay somewhere so nice again.
