“good location, and simple, clean guesthouse.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013

I only stayed for one night but it fitted the bill. On the hill in the old town, and easy for getting around Lisbon. Simple small guesthouse - clean and well located. My room had windows on two sides - small but nicely furnished except that wardrobe stuck out into the room. That was the downside to windows on two sides.... No problem with noise. Good bed. Small bathroom.

Breakfast was good enough - just coffee, juice, bread/croissant etc. Very good value for money given hotel prices - only paid about 50 euros.

very easy to get to from the airport. the aerobus to the centre drops you at the bottom of the Gloria funicular (get off at Restaurodores). then at the top of Gloria, turn right and walk for about four minutes. only about 6 euros and very straightforward.

I have been here in the most popular season and I had expected more I guess. First, there is no mini fridge on the room, which is essentially when there is 30-35 degrees outside and you therefore drink a lot of water. Second, the toilet door could not be closed and locked. It was not so big a deal for me, but I could imagine it would be for others. Third, the breakfast. The quality of it wasn't great and you feel like you have to get up really early even to get some coffee that isn't cold. It's weird that they only have one service worker in the morning to serve the breakfast for the people of 40 rooms.

To sum it up, you get what you pay for. Plus: good location, staff is nice, rooms comfortable. Negative: tubs are handheld showers, bathroom smells in the mornings (fixed by running constant water through all the drains), old and outdated rooms. Overall, I would stay there again if I was on a low budget (price is fair), other wise you may be disappointed if you expect to much.

We stayed for 3 nights in June. The location is perfect in Bairo Alto very close to typical reasonably priced restaurants. St Georges Castle is within walking distance although you have to contend with the steep hills of Lisbon. The property is a typical old upright hotel with an old fashioned but effective elevator once you have climbed the entrance stairs. It is very clean and our room overlooking the Tagus on the 4th floor was of adequate size and serviced daily. Reception is very helpful and will advise on sightseeing. My only real criticism is that the breakfast, although continental as advertised, could be a little more generous and imaginative - juice, cereal, two slices of processed ham per person and two slices of cheese. One roll and one croissant plus lukewarm coffee. Despite this we were very satisfied with value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Tagus River.

we arrived about 8am from the (wonderful) sleeper train from Madrid and the lady at the desk, who was busy checking people out, seemed a bit peeved that we were trying to check in already - but she asked us to go away until 10am, when she would have a room ready, which was in fact the case (we went to the great neighborhood cafe on the corner, which is decorated like an old-fashioned movie house and has the absolute freshest chicken and rice soup ever)
the rest of our stay the front desk group could not have been more charming and helpful
yes, the breakfast can get a bit boring after a few days, but it certainly covers the basics (juice, coffee or tea, rolls, jam, butter, meat, cheese)
the location is great - just up the street from the Solar do Vinho do Porto, which is much more atmospheric than its counterpart in Porto, and also close to the adorable 'elevator' down the hill
if you have a lot of luggage, there are some steps before the elevator
on our 2nd stay we got a view of the river, which was nicer than our first view of the street, but both rooms were large enough (not enough hangers though) and very clean
don't expect the Ritz and you'll be happy (once you get up those stairs at the entrance)

While this is an affordable option in a good location, we had a disappointing stay. The building has its historic charm and is well kept up. We were in a family room on the first floor - nice high ceilings and plenty of beds, but we could here every step and movement from above. Plus the traffic noise made for a restless night. They let us drop luggage when our room wasn't ready but we found front desk service not that welcoming. Breakfast was a miss for us. The breakfast room was full so we sat in the tv lounge with cereal bowls perched on our legs. When I tried to get a coffee cup I was stopped - you only get bread, cheese and coffee if you are seated at a proper table. So, we missed out on breakfast since we couldn't wait too long (plane to catch). Perhaps we just had bad luck, given all the positive reviews, so just be sure you aren't on a low floor and be ready to wait for a table for breakfast!

Room Tip: As high as possible!!

Despite reading reviews from others, there is always some concern about an hotel booked on-line. In this case these fears were unfounded as the Pensao Londres lived up to its reputation. The location is great; its clean and comfortable and the breakfast, though basic, is of a high standard. The staff are all helpful and friendly. Even my request to change rooms due to traffic noise was polietly and willing granted. I would not hesitate to return there and thoroughly recommended it as an excellent value for money hotel.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper ask for a room at the back. I opted for a room with absolutely no view i...
