“Perfect Budget Accommodation”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2012

We stayed for 3 nights mid February 2012 - Selected the Pensao Londres from previous reviews. Do use the hotel travel guide from Lisbon Airport, easy-peasey stuff to get the bus. The Airport Bus was about 5.50 Euros return, tickets can be purchased from the ladies at the bus stop outside arrivals. One small tip, do make sure you indicate obviously, by pressing the bell in plenty of time when you want to leave the bus as the drivers don't hang about! Using the Airport Bus really gets you into the swing of Lisbon, the highlight has to be using 'Gloria' the Funicula upto the Pension which is set within the most perfect location for exploring Lisbon.
We arrived to early at 11AM and our room wasn't ready but we were able to leave our bags in the hotels bagroom until checkin time. We had a first floor double room with en-suite. The rooms are traditionally & simply furnished with very comfortable beds and of extremly high house keeping standards. We had housekeeping every day, clean towels, bed making etc. Included in the room charge is a Continental Breakfast again, all kept simple, croissants, rolls, ham's, cheeses, ample coffee/tea etc. All served by the lovely ladies :)
Bairro Alto district is a good mixture of cafe's sitauted around small parks/gardens, designer/antique shops and of an evening, the whole area is buzzing!!
If you want to explore a fabulous good value European City, and enjoy a more traditional setting, accommodation where you feel like your staying in a friends house, than this is for you.

Room Tip: If you book directly weith the hotel request a room with a view - plus book early as this place is p...

It was a wonderful stay in the hotel. We were 10, two family room and one double room for 3 nights. Room was clean and very friendly helpful reception. Room is cleaned everyday while we were out sightseeing. Taxi transfer can be arrange at the reception. Close to restaurant and trendy bar along rua de rosa. The only thing need a bit of improvement is the choice of breakfast, which was a bit limited. But for the price advertised, its definitely worth staying here.

One tip for getting to the hotel:

Due to the hotel is at the top of the hill, its worth to take the tram at 'calcada de gloria' all the way up the hill and walk to Rua Dom Pedro V. Or take the bus number 758 from 'Cais Sodré' station.

I stayed in a total of four hostels and hotels during my stay in Portugal and Pensao Londres was by far the best. The rooms are well-equipped, the staff is friendly, and the rooms are an incredibly good deal. I paid 5 euros more per night than I did in the private hostel rooms I had been staying in and got five times that back in comfort and service. Highly recommended!

Nice old building in the center of Barrio Alto, close distances to all mayor sightseeing spots. Nightlife around the hotel, but well insulating windows. Beautiful view on Tajo river from upper floors. Rooms a bit small but cosy with real furniture, no plywood hotel stuff.
Nice breakfast with croissants and lots of strooong coffee.
Helpful receptionists speak good english and are a wealth of information.
Clean!!!!!

Visited in October 2011.
Staff were always very pleasant.
+ points:
Good location for day/ night-life - walking distance to main sights/ team-stop, nice bars & restaurants nearby.
Nice enough breakfast provided in the rate.

- points:
2 single beds, not a double
'Private bathroom' was a cupboard within the room and had a serious plumbing issue which made the stay not entirely pleasant!
Noise at night with other guests coming back from night-time adventures.

The location is great, the rooms are clean and those with views over the city and river are very nice, especially at sunset. stuff is very nice and helpful. the rooms with private bathroom are not that great because at times it can become very smelly, the fault of old sewage systems; and also the bathroom is small and cramped. In winter it can be annoying with the air con heating, because ceilings are high. some rooms can be also very noisy, especially one in front of the elevator. neighbors can be heard through the thin walls. However, for small budget, it's quite good.

Room Tip: nicer rooms are on higher floors, with view over the river, without bathroom, for avoiding eventual...

I was looking for a reasonable pensione in a decent part of Lisbon for 3 nights, and did a fair amount of research, and often the same name kept coming up - Pensao Londres. I paid 25 Euros/night for a single room with a small balcony, but a shared bathroom. However, the room had its own sink and bidet, and I never had to wait for the shared bathroom (large, but a bit old and tired). The room had limited cable TV and free wireless internet (there's also a laptop that guest can use free just by the breakfast room). The room rate included a modest breakfast (cereal, coffee, juice, a croissant, a bread roll and some cheese and cold cuts) that never changed. The staff are very friendly, and there is someone at reception 24/7.

Aside from these pleasant benefits, the Pensao Londres is also located in the up-and-coming Bairro Alto area. Literally right across the street, hidden in a laneway, is a hip bar called Lost In, which has a great view of the city. Just a few doors down from the hotel is another hip bar called Bar Chine. Despite the proximity to some nightlife, it is a reasonably quiet area.

Downsides? Well, try NOT to get a room on the second floor, as this is where the reception desk and breakfast room are. As reception is "open" all night, there is a buzzer letting recption know that someone requires entry late at night. Light sleepers may have difficulty sleeping.

The location is quite convenient, but requires going uphill which is tough with luggage. I benefitted from advice given by another reviewer on Trip Advisor regarding the use of the AeroBus (great value) and the funicular vehicle (Elevador da Gloria) using the same ticket.

All in all, the hotel presents great value, but it is a very basic form of accomodation.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, and try avoid the second floor
