The first thing to note is that the Dom Manuel is located well away from the tourist areas. If you want to be in the heart of historic Lisbon, this is not the right choice. However, it is in a nice-ish residential area, just across from the wonderful Gulbenkian Museum, and close to a Metro stop (which will get you into the heart of Lisbon in two or three stops and about five minutes).

The Dom Manuel is perhaps best thought of as a time capsule - incredibly well preserved but dated. This is what an very chic Lisbon hotel probably looked like sometime between 1958 and 1976 - the fittings, including the dark wood beds, the dark wood bar, the dark wood staircases (are you sensing a decor theme?), the bright tiles in the bathroom, the magnificently kitsch false stained glass window in the basement breakfast room, and the luxuriously appointed tv room, appear to be original. The glamour here is not so much faded, as preserved in aspic. If you have a look at the photos on the hotel's web site (which also look like they were taken thirty years ago), they will show you almost exactly what this hotel looks like now.

The staff are friendly and very helpful, if a little reserved. The rooms are small but very clean and well maintained. The bathroom was sparkling and everything in the room worked fine. The breakfast buffet is extensive and essentially good but, again, like a flashback to the 70s. I suspect a few of those breakfast rolls have been there since then.

We were a little surprised to be given twin beds, but otherwise were perfectly happy - we did feel occasionally that we had drifted onto the set of a 70's portuguese sitcom, which kept us entertained for days.

I wouldn't stay here again, because there are clearly nicer hotels much closer to the action. However, the Dom Manuel seems to do a roaring trade in business travellers. If you are looking for a quiet retreat or are an afficionado of the interior design trends of the mid to late 20th Century, then the Dom Manuel bears consideration.

Hotel Dom Manuel I is a nice quiet hotel in a residential part of Lisbon. It's not far from a huge department store the Corte Inglese, a lovely if not hilly park, and a few nice smaller museums. There is also metro stops nearby as well that will get you into the heart of Historic Lisbon.

The free breakfast was very nice, but I reccomend getting their early as they do run out of the more delicious food. They have a nice array of pastries, cheeses, cold cuts, as well as eggs and hot dogs. Also juice, coffee, and tea. The staff is very friendly and helpful they would circle areas on the map and tell us as best they could how to get places. One night we wanted a nice resteraunt nearby and the consierge actually walked us to the resteraunt and make sure we got a table!!

The only downside is the distance from central Lisbon, the city itself is very hilly and spread out. I'm not sure where an ideal hotel would be located as the sites are spread far and wide. The room was a bit small and we had two twin beds pushed together instead of a queen, but were pretty easy going so it wasn't an issue. This is not the hotel to go to if you're expecting opulant luxury, but if your a traveler on a budget and want a nice clean, friendly place to stay consider the Hotel Dom Manuel I.

Overall a nice budget hotel.

“Decent, but not worth the 4-star rating”

My daughter and I stayed at the Dom Manuel for three nights. The staff were courteous but aloof, perhaps due to the language difference though they spoke English well enough.
The room was a good size and very clean. The bathroom was also fairly large with a tub/shower and toiletries provided, again very clean.
As the room did not have any coffee/tea facilities, we went to the bar (non-alcoholic, which was not great) for a coffee. We were the only people in the bar and after a few minutes were told someone would be with us shortly. 15 minutes later someone arrived to serve us. 10 minutes later we were given our coffee. So, not 4-star service at all.
The room had a safe but you have to ask at the front desk for the key, only to be charged 0.50 euro/day for the priviledge.
Location was a 30-40 minute walk to the river (and we walk pretty quickly) but the metro stop is only a couple of blocks away and the metro is quick and clean and safe so it wasn't a problem.
Breakfast was included and had a large selection of cold cereals, pastries, fruit, cheese and meat and some hot sausages and eggs as well. They also had a table of light foods, including bran cereals and skimmed milk, so that was all good.
So, it was a decent enough hotel but nothing special and nothing that merited the 4 stars. I think the Sana Reno (3 stars), a couple doors down on the same street, looked nicer and from what I've found just now, has better facilities and is cheaper as well.
