“A PALACE THAT IS FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

I am still here at the palce and words can not tell you how fantastic this palace hotel is. Everything is five stars to the staff, service , gardens, rooms and breakfast buffet. Its in a nice area. Special thanks to Marie at check in and to Rui the shuttle driver to different sites and the best porter. Thank you both again Rui & Maria. First you are given a tour of the grounds, gardens and services, then you are escortted back to your room where your bags are waiting for you. If you want a great price then hit trip advisor, or hotels.com we got a rate of $233 for a double with an upgrade plus free buffet, not even in New York City can you get a five star hotel for that price including taxes. The art work is fantastic too and the dinningrooms are a picture out of an art book. The food served at breakfast is just great. Thank you once again Pestana Palace staff for a great time in a beautiful city, Lisbo. Now if I can only find out where I put my crown.

This hotel really is in an old palace and while the accommodation is in new wings (which is probably a good thing) the ambience of the old palace is there to be enjoyed when dining even just for breakfast.

Further the staff are friendly and helpful and our four nights there were memorable.

While it is a taxi ride away from downtown Lisbon that is not too much of a problem as the taxis are always there and the cost is not great.

And Lisbon - wow.

Sometimes these places are stiff. The staff can be so formal that you can't relax. This was not the case here. The hotel used to be a home and this place has that feeling. Te rooms are located in two modern wings that flank the palace...so you feel at home in all the huge public areas.

Breakfast is good. The bar area cozy...with live pianist.

Only slight downer was the size of the standard rooms. They were decent, but a tiny bit small...but perhaps that is only due to the scale of the palace. They do need to update the tv in room...they are low res.

Will go back for sure! It is astonishing the beauty.

Room Tip: Rooms above the pool can be noisy.

Having been introduced to this hotel by friends, we joined them for a special celebration. We were given a very warm welcome.
Having checked in, we were shown around the palace, and what we saw was only the start. Our rooms were extremely well appointed, as you would expect of an hotel of this standard, over looking the gardens.
All staff members could not have been more helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
The dinner was served beautifully, food delicious.
The breakfast the following morning was everything you could wish for, and more!
We were allowed a late check out which meant we could enjoy or second day to the full.
We will definately be back there again.

We are very pleased that everything in your stay went very well and that you felt welcome – that is our main concern. It is very rewarding to know that the food, namely the dinner and breakfast, exceeded your expectations! We are glad that you were able to enjoy both days to the full, especially since it was a special celebration.

Thank you for your kind words about our staff. We do indeed work hard to make every guest’s stay a wonderful experience! And please know that nothing ever is too much trouble: we are here to please your every request.

We have lived in Portugal for 14 years. Our hobby is travelling around and exploring Iberia. We have stayed in over 60 Paradors and have visited all except 2 of the Pousadas in Portugal. We normally stay in the Pousadas at Queluz or Cascais when we visit Lisbon. This time I wanted to have a very special experience and thought that the Pestana Palace would be it. The Gardens are beautiful and the old rooms of the Palace are delightful. The staff were generally friendly but there were a number of problems with the service at the hotel that made my feel disappointed with our visit. The sound insulation in the garden wing is poor and we had to move rooms. Even so it was still noisy. The staff tried to be helpful but I felt their hearts weren´t in it. There was a sloppiness in terms of the overall management - the difference between a ´healthy´organisation and an ´apparently healthy´organisation. Usually we are excited about being in wonderful buildings but this visit left us cold. Our next stop was the Pousada at Obidos where the reception there was strongly welcoming and all of the staff were ´on the ball´- not because they had to be but because they wanted to be.

We spent 3 nights here during our spring break in March while traveling in Portugal with our 14yr old son. I chose it mostly from the other positive reviews I read on this site. Everything about this hotel was wonderful. The staff was beyond gracious and helpful. They assisted us with everything from finding lost airline luggage, dinner reservations, renting a car and motorbike! They made everything easy. The hotel itself is a beautiful, old world place that was as fun to explore as Lisbon itself. Though it was too chilly for swimming outside the pool area (and entire grounds) were lush gorgeous. The indoor pool area was the nicest I have seen. We all enjoyed exploring the public rooms that are each different. Our room itself had everything we needed and was most comfortable. The breakfast (included) was among the best European style breakfast buffets I have had. I was initially concerned that the location would be challenging, a bit outside of the center of town, but this was not the case. They do provide a free shuttle service into the center of Lisbon and will drop/pick-up at certain times from 4 different locations. Taxi's also are easy and were only about EUR 7 or so. This location is also quite close to Belem which has some of Lisbon's most interesting attractions. Yes...do have a custard pastry - or 2 at the famous Belem bakery. So - the Pestana Palace was superb and a rather magical place to spend a few nights!

Dear renee w,

Thank you very much for such kind words. We very much appreciate your review, it is as important for our future guests as it is for us! In the first place, thank you for choosing the Pestana Palace Hotel & National Monument for your spring break. We were very pleased to know that you found everything wonderful. Our staff will be delighted to read your comments on their performance, which we will make sure to share with them. We are glad that you didn’t have to worry about a thing; after all, you were on vacations!

It is very good to know that you had a wonderful time ‘exploring’ the Palace and each of its different rooms, the gardens and the pool area – how unfortunate you weren’t able to do some swimming in the outdoor pool! We are very glad the room was to your liking, such as the breakfast. The custard pastries (or Pastéis de Belém as we call them in Portuguese) are really really great; it is great that you tried them, as they are one of the most traditional pastries in Lisbon.

All in all it is great that everything was superb and we hope we will have you back in the future!

Kind regards,

Paulo

Visited the Pestana Palac in march. Awondeful hotel, with a lovely old building and modern guest wing situated in a beautiful garden. Beautiful room. Fantastic staff and service, we love the restaurant. The hotel is a little off center, but have its own shuttel seervice. Several alternatives to transport close by, such as the old train.

Room Tip: superior room overlooking the garden

Dear Berit B,

Thank you very much for your kind review. We are very happy to know that everything went well, and that you appreciated the contrast of the beautiful old Palace and the modernity of the new wings – it is truly one of the characteristics that excel us. Thank you for your kind comments on our staff’s performance; we will definitely share them with the team. The hotel is indeed a little bit off centered but, just as you stated, we have a free of charge shuttle service, and of course, there are various transports close by, such as the tram or old train, which I hope you had the opportunity to experience, as it is very characteristic of Lisbon.
We hope to have back soon at Pestana Palace Hotel & National Monument!

All the best,

Paulo
