“Very enjoyable stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

Late September break in Lisbon in a lovely hotel which is rather let down by the theme of Hollywood, which it doesn't need as it is a very good hotel without a theme. Met each morning in the lift by larger than life size image of either Humphrey Bogart or Audrey Hepburn which was a little off-putting. Each bedroom is themed. We were originally in the Jackie Chan room. We checked in and were told by the receptionist that the room was rather small but we could change to a larger room next day if we wished, which we did. We said goodbye to Jackie Chan and hello to 'Rear Window' which appeared to be an Alfred Hitchcock film - a fabulous room which I think was a King Suite, and it was indeed very glamorous - huge, very comfortable bed with a large dressing table and chair, occasional table and two more chairs, lots of lamps and room to spread out - plenty of room to sit and read on wet days in Lisbon (which we had from start to finish). Very good bathroom. Hotel situated next to Marques Pombal Metro station which is easy to get in and out of the centre (24 hour metro ticket 6 Euros which we used to get to and from airport and around the city as you can hop on and off trams and metro. The tickets were a little temperamental to use (buy ticket for 50 cents, then re-charge when needed), we had very heavy rain during our trip and found the rain affected the operation of the tickets to scan properly, but very useful way to get around. Hotel about 30 minutes walk from city centre. Hotel restaurant is the 'Great American Disaster' which is accessed from outside, through a rather strange arrangement through a small shopping centre. Restaurant in-keeping with Hollywood theme and is a 1950s style American diner serving burgers etc. Used on our first evening and found it was good value and nice burger, but wouldn't want to use to get a Portuguese experience of dining. Seemed popular with local young population. All in all a very good hotel which I would recommend, but needs to ditch the Hollywood theme which it doesn't need.

This hotel is situated a stones throw away from the metro station at the Marques de Pombal making it easy to find and handy from the Airport also the rest of Lisbon by metro and walking.
We too was met by what appears to be the same surly female receptionist who has the charm of a angry rhino, as we regulalry said more as we walked through the lobby to be ignored. That said she is not indicative of the rest of the staff.

The room comprised of an entrance lobby which had a couch which probably doubled as an extra bed, large bedroom and large bathroom. The bed being massive, large wall mounted tv safe and refrigurator.

Aircon was adequate but goes off when you take out your key card so rooms got warm when out even with the windows open shutters closed and curtains pulled but soon cooled down.

Its clean and tidy but in places a little tired and looked like it had had a hard season, but was ok as a base and was cleaned each day with fresh towels. Only thing missing was milk for the tea and coffee but I am sure had we asked we would have got.

We had fault with the safe on the first night there and the gentleman who was on evening reception came and sorted very quickly in contrast to the day women he was friendly and spoke in passing.

Breakfast is taken on the second floor and looks out onto the Praca Marques Do Pombal and has a very good veriety and was regulalry stocked the staff was excellant and friendly and willing to help if you needed anything.

The only thing I found quirky was the fact that brocholli, peas and sliced green beans was served with the bacon for breakfast, to me thats wrong but hey ho each to their own.

Its a nice steady walk into the centre down the tree lined Avinida da Liberdade, and there are a number of good eating places nearby one we found and would recomend if staying in this area is the Restaurante Forninho Saloio on Travessa das Parreiras (look for the statue of the fat chef).

My only real gripe is the fact that in this day and age Hotels expect you to pay for WIFI build it into the price and make it free.

All in all enjoyed our stay and would go again if in Lisbon.

Arrived in the evening to warm and friendly welcome via taxi from the airport, this is a themed hotel based on Hollywood greats! Thought it wasn't my cup of tea, but was very pleasant and surprised. Reasonably priced and with very clean and excellent facilities that included small bar down stairs, large breakfast room and outside seating area which was lovely to sit out in the evening with a drink.

Our room was clean and tidy and bed was very comfortable with reasonable sized bathroom and we stayed for three nights and breakfast was good.

Hotel is situated at the top of the main street of Lisbon it is a long walk down to the front so take your flat pumps! We enjoyed the walk though and kept us trim!
Lisboa offers a cosmopolitan city with plenty of choice for eating out, designer shops, tourist sightseeing buses and beautiful variety of architecture.

A beautiful city with lots to do!
Must visit the Beer museum, Castle (although it was badly signposted and never found it) and the many eateries supplying local fish in traditional Portugese style.

FAB place better than any seaside resort... especially if you want to sample the culture of Portugal!

The hotel receptionist was in the wrong job! It was almost too much trouble for her to check us in, and asking for any information was as much use as a chocolate chisel! We had to fight the porter to relinquish hold of our luggage, he was not going to let it go until he got a tip!
Parking the car was also a nightmare, but could have been made a lot easier if the the hotel receptionist had given us some information!
On the plus side the rooms were OK, except for the noise transmission from the floor above. breakfast was also OK
I think for the money thought there would be much better placebo stay in Lisbon.

Room Tip: Use another hotel!

A gem of a hotel, not too impressive on the outside and then you step inside into the retro black and white foyer. The hotel has some excellent touches which are just the right side of cheesy and so aren't tacky but instead are tasteful, a lifesize Audrey Hepburn is inside one lift, rooms are named after films/ directors/ actors, and there are famous film quotes written on the corridors, "my momma always said life was like a box of chocolates........" was written on ours.

Room was spotlessly clean, bed was comfy and the room had a fab retro feel, will definitely be back.

I don't understand the comments about reception staff, they were lovely, very friendly and helpful and even made jokes.

My wife and daughter and I stayed for 2 nights in early July 2013.

The lady on the front desk when we arrived did not say "Hello" or "Welcome to the hotel" either in English or Portugese, she just looked at us like she hadn't a clue what we were doing there. Very strange that after all the previous comments about unfriendly staff going back many months that this issue has not been dealt with. Also very strange that you would put someone like this on the front desk in the first place.

The aircon system is poor and is inadequate to deal with the heat of Lisbon.

The breakfast is good and the view from the breakfast room is great, location is good, the movie theme is nice, these are why I have not rated it lower.

Stayed here for a week. Rooms clean with wooden floors, so when someone is walking on the floor above you can hear every step. Issues with bathroom, not my room but friends. Sink wouldn't drink. English spoken only so-so, communication an issue. Restaurant end of block with meals average 10 Euro, good food and free Internet. Didn't pay the 5 euro a day for Internet at this hotel as I was out most of the day. No pool, air conditioning worked well as it as 36 C on some days.
