“Good fado in Bairro Alto - local authentic atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2013

A Tasca do Chico was recommended by my hotel when I asked about a not touristic place to listen to traditional Portuguese fado. The place is tiny and gets packed very quickly, so you should book a table in advance when they have fado evenings (on Wednesday and Friday, maybe on week-end, fado starts at 9-9.30 p.m., you could check details by calling them or asking your hotel to call).

The experience was really authentic: located in the heart of lively Bairro Alto area with all bars, A Tasca do Chico has a nice atmosphere and friendly service. You actually listen to fado for free, just ordering a drink or two and some appetizers (this is not a restaurant, but they have cheese and meat plates, some olives, etc.).

Fado singers are real ones and nt just actors like in some other "tourist traps", some of them even famous in Lisbon, and you could buy their CDs if you wish. On the walls, lots of photos of famous fado singers.

You can stay as long as you wish, I left at 11.30 p.m., and fado lasts till 1 a.m., depending on the singers' mood.

All in all, a good experience to discover fado, I will recommend for your visit to Lisbon!

“The Real Fado Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

A tiny place, kind of run down and packed with people, showcases the best fado you'll ever experience: the real one. Fado vadio is sang by intense amateurs and accompanied by two great musicians, everything unplugged! The atmosphere is great, laid back and intimate, but the food and drinks are just OK. The service is friendly but chaotic, and the music, ahhh!, the music is pure emotion and truth. Really worth a visit. Tip: Get there early (before 8pm) to sit or be prepared for the long lines.

“Wonderful Fado”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

A tiny, packed bar with glorious live music. Half the customers were standing. We had to force our way through the crowd at the door just to get inside, then stood awkwardly by the bar while the music was played in front of us. A couple of glasses of Sangria at 1.5 Euros was all we bought, and in exchange we got a full evening of beautiful, unamplified music. Food was obviously available, but I can't speak for that, just for the music and the atmosphere, which were both fantastic.
