“Astonishing Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

If the title "Tile Museum" doesn't tell you anything, just ignore that and head on out to visit it. You would never imagine how many gorgeous things can be done with ceramic tile - and this musuem will show you centuries of them. It incloses a beautiful old church. And there's a nice café with interesting "kitchen" tiles on display. One of the most interesting places in Lisbon.

“a gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

With a little bit of research we were able to find this museum which is tucked away in an area that is not a mainstream tourist area. Buses do indeed get you within a block or two! We got there just in time for opening and were able to easily wander through this museum at our leisure. There were no crowds to fight through so it was easy to see everything and read as much as we pleased about each of the exhibits. This museum was packed with tile murals from every era and the written explanations were in English and were packed with interesting information. The Portuguese know how to "do tile" and the tile murals are absolutely worth viewing. An excellent way to spend a couple of hours.

“Difficult to get to but worth the trip.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

It took us 2 days to figure out how to get here using public transportation. What ever you do, do not go to the St. Apolonia metro stop expecting to get a bus to the museum. This is what you need to do to get there. Go to the Arroios metro stop and find the 718 or 742 bus stop which is right in front of a bakery. Tell the driver that you want to go to the tile museum and he will let you know when to get out. When you get out you will be directly across the street from it. We arrived at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and the admission was free. Lots of beautiful hand painted tile work inside covering several centuries of history. On the top floor is the gigantic panoramic view of Lisbon painted on tile work. Amazing.

“Well worth a visit, pleasant cafeteria”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

Little treasure of a museum, easily reached by bus from the centre of town (if you don't miss the stop like we did, as not all buses go directly past the museum and stop 150m or so around the corner). I found it made me appreciate even more the tiled houses you see everywhere in the city, and the tiling in many of the churches also. The cafe is small but very pleasant to sit in, with a courtyard area full of plants - we saw quite a few locals calling in for something to eat.

“Must see in Lisbon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

It is totally incomprehensible why other reviewers claim this place hard to be find or get there. From Praça do Comércio (which is in the center without doubt) you have 3 different choice of buses (759 or 781 or 728) to get there. From the bus station you need to walk a few hundred meters to the museum. For us it took less than 15 minutes.
It is worth to go there not just for the tiles and the temple inside (Igreja da Madre de Deus) - which is truly amazing - but some pieces of modern art. Personally my favourite is Sofia Castro's masterpiece: Bad animal with good heart-ill weeds grow apace.
Free of charge with Lisbon card.
