What a lovely place. I was a little worried when the taxi pulled up outside an anonymous doorway in a quiet backstreet, especially as the taxi driver didn't know the hotel and we had to show him the address written down. However, the uniformed doorman was at the car door in a moment to welcome us. We left our luggage with him in the small lobby and made our way up the magical stairway.

As other reviewers have mentioned, there are a lot of stairs and they aren't very even so not a good choice if you have any trouble walking. That said, Lisbon is a city for walking and is built over a whole bunch of hills - all of the 'sights' are on steep slopes - so if you aren't into walking, the city may not be for you.

Our room was fabulous. We had ordered a superior double but they were full so we were put into a deluxe (the next category up) which meant as well as more space we had our own terrace that was not overlooked. This wasn't much use in November but if it were summer this would be fabulous and I would definately want to pay extra for this. Only problem was that we had twin beds rather than a double.

I'd recommend this place in a heartbeat - great staff, excellent rooms, a beautiful bathroom and a piece of history.

We had two nights in Lisbon and wanted a nice room. We got it and it was 170 euros a night. Bathroom was outstanding with all of the traveler's needs. Friendly front desk staff, but restaurant staff left us disgruntled. The climb is not for handicapped and there is no elevator. We faced the street above the lobby at the top of the stairs and it was unbearably noisy from the drunken revelers below. Request a room away from the street if you want to get any sleep at all. They kept us up until 4am every night.
Breakfast was good for 15 euros per person.
Nearly impossible to find as there is no sign except over the door which is flat against the wall. They saved us a parking space and we left the car and walked or bused it into town. Lots of traffic on this street. If you can afford it, this is a nice place to stay.

“How very quaint”

York House

Enjoyed a 3 night stay at the York House in June 2007 . Very calming, quaint small hotel on the outskirts of Lisbon. Service and staff were friendly. Didnt sample the evening menu but Breakfast worked out about £10 each, good selection to choose from. Hotel doesnt look much on the drive from the airport and literally looks like just a door so could quite easily be missed driving past. The only downside to the hotel I feel is the location, a good 25 minute walk to the shopping area and everything had to be done in taxi. If you're not into a walking holiday then dont stay here. Ideal for a short break but not sure I would manage a week here.

“Wonderful staff and lovely hotel”

York House

Aug 15, 2007

This is a beautiful hotel with a lot of character-lovely garden to sit in and great food and wine. But what sets it apart is the staff.I fell on the street and thought I had broken my wrist. The Manager of the hotel insisted on accompanying me to hospital and stayed with me to translate and make sure I was looked after.I cant thank him enough.

We felt like being at home in an amazing environment, specially taking into account that we were pretty much in the city centre. Beautiful garden, great amenities and the staff is second to none: very helpful and friendly. The room was spacious with classy decoration. We will be back!
