“A gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

A fantastic find, the perfect hotel for a city visit. It is like staying in a country house with the owners away! It is beautifully furnished and the library upstairs is perfect after a days sightseeing to make a pot of tea - no charge! There is a terrace with wonderful views over the city. Restaurants are within walking distance and excellent. The buses and trams are convenient and the Reception staff are so helpful. We loved our stay here!

Based on TA reviews we decided to book As Janelas Verdes for a long weekend in Lisbon, and what a good choice this turned out to be.

Arriving at Lisbon airport, we had amongst others organized a private transfer via the hotel. When we arrived, a lady with our names on a sign explained us that she wasn’t the one waiting for us, started to make phone calls as she couldn’t get the ‘right’ person on the line, and the after speaking to someone, told us to wait. Wait for a private transfer? Come on, so we decided to take a taxi. Not what you call a good start. However, from then onwards everything was top notch.

The hotel is nicely located not too far from the inner city vibe, which can be easily reached by public transport or taxi’s. which are by the way both remarkably cheap in this city. It’s an old classic building, nicely turned into a boutique hotel. Our room with views over the river was big, with a sitting and sleeping area. Well appointed, high ceilings etc. The only ‘negative’ thing for me is the bathroom, where you have to take a shower in your bath with an old fashioned bath curtain.

Service in this hotel is of a very high level. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is a real treat with for instance sparkling wine, fresh orange juice and a Nespresso coffee machine next to normal filter coffee as well. Furthermore a nice selection of breads, cheeses etc. The Library with honesty bar on the third floor is a another great asset to this place. Here is a nice terrace with beautiful views over the river combined with an excellent selection of drinks

I would highly recommend As Janelas Verdes as a top hotel in Lisbon and one we would gladly return to.

Very pleasant hotel where you can feel at home. Great quality of food, breakfast of course but also room service (simple and at a reasonnable price). For breakfast there is a great choice of breads, cakes (even pasteis), juices, eggs, fresh fruit salad...and it is available up to 12.00. Place is quiet, staff efficient and not too present. The terrasse offers a wonderful view up to the Tage. Tea or coffee is available the whole day, compliments of the hotel. Bus connections are good and direct for most places ( Gulbenkian, Oceanorium, Belem, City center): You can find some spots to have a meal not too far away.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view on the river and precise you want it quiet (not facing street) I would sa...

We stayed at this small Hotel at the end of October, and it really deserves to be awarded.
As requested. we were given a double room, but as it faced the road, I asked for another room and we were given a twin, with a view of the river. It was on the second floor, had a big window and although a Standard , it was a very good size.I t had a little hallway as you walked in.
The Hotel is beautifully decorated, like an English Country House, with comfy sofas and flowers, and there are newspapers you can sit and read. The Library on the 3rd floor is lovely, and welcoming with Nespresso coffee and biscuits and cakes on offer most of the day.We would go there and relax in between sightseeing. Because the Hotel is small and cozy, you could actually chat to other guests up there.Yes it is not in the centre of Lisbon. But it is next door to a must see Museum, and there are 2 buses which stop outside to take you to Belem, where most of the other Museums are.I would definitely stay there again, and will recommend it to friends. The Breakfast was the best we had in Lisbon, because we have stayed in 2 other Hotels there. It is well worth getting a room with a River view.

Room Tip: A view of the River

We stayed at As Janelas Verdes for 2 nights on our honeymoon and it was one of the nicest hotels I have been to. We arrived very early having caught the sleeper train from Madrid and expected to have to wait for our room but it was all ready with a complimentary upgrade to a stunning spacious room with lovely views. Everywhere was very clean, comfortable and the staff lovely, nothing was too much trouble as all they want is for you to enjoy your stay. The terraced balcony, was comfortable and a real sun trap! I had never seen honesty bars before in a hotel and thought it was a great idea and there are complimentary nibbles and homemade biscuits to go with your drink. Breakfast was served in the garden and there was plenty of choice and of good quality. The hotel is in a convenient location to either walk into Lisbon centre or hop on a trolley bus. We thought Lisbon was wonderful and when we go back we will stay again at As Janelas Verdes as we loved it.

This was recommended by our travel agent. It was a great value with beautiful historically furnished rooms, plentiful tasty breakfasts, and wonderful harbor views. Away from main tourist centers but easy walk or public transportation to city center. A wonderful surprise.
