“Graciousness and refinement”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2013

Practically next door to the Museum of Ancient Arts and about a mile or so from Praca Comercio downtown via bus 741, As Janelas Verdes provided the best stay of our Portugal travels. We lucked out with a river view suite and a most comfortable bed, excellent linens, tea, complimentary canter of port, good bathroom--all well cleaned and cared for daily. Ample breakfasts were served on the patio, walled, with pergola and greenery. We didn't get a chance to use the 3rd floor library but it looked comfortable with its papers and self-serve bar. The staff was friendly and helpful. Oh, and the neighborhood is fine. Mornings we walked in the vicinity. Nights we were too tired to walk back so we took a €5 taxi--but would have.

As janelas reflects its context, lovely, slightly down at the heels Lisbon. Hotel is pretty, common rooms are quite well furnished, room was comfortable, garden area is sweet. But we were constantly losing power, there is a bit of a musty smell, and service was kind but not professional ( not be able to suggest a place for Fado?) its also a bit remote from where you want to go though quieter. All considered, nice, but I would probably find something else next time round closer to the Barrio Alta. But don't skip Lisbon! It's quite wonderful for all its faded glory

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your feedback.
Whilst we are pleased to know that you liked our decor and our garden, we are most concerned that not everything went well during your stay. We are extremely sorry for that fact. We can assure that we work very hard in order to maintain our XVIII century building in impeccable condition. Our staff is also always willing to help our guests with the best suggestions in Lisbon and we believe that there was some misunderstanding from our side with the recommendation of the Fado place.

We very much hope that we can encourage you to stay with us again and provide you with a totally satisfactory stay (you can also easily walk to Bairro Alto or take the 28 Tram).

Yours sincerely,
Diogo Laranjo

I booked this based on the "location" and the picture of the outside of the hotel on expedia.
The location is NOT satisfactory at all. We arrived at night. It was in a graffiti ridden, "closed up" area. Looked like the Bronx. you would NEVER venture out at night, and there is no where to go anywhere. Inside is charming and cute. friendly staff. Set up like a boarding house with great common areas. Rooms are small, bathrooms good size and everything was neat and clean. That being said...I called another hotel, who came and rescued me and my travel partner.....and probably our experience in Lisbon.
again...dont get me wrong......very cute hotel...just not what i expected or was led to believe from online investigation.

Dear Guest,
Thank you very much for your comments about our premises and our friendly staff.
We are very sorry that you didn't like our location. As Janelas Verdes is located in a triangle formed by 3 different districts that are very safe to walk any time of the day or night: the aristocratic Lapa which is the Embassy quarter of Lisbon, the popular Bairro da Madragoa which is one of the most characteristic historic quarters and the Bairro de Santos (Lisbon’s Design District).
There are many little restaurants and small shops around us which is a characteristic of Lisbon’s historic quarters. This area is not so crowded and touristic as other parts of Lisbon but that is also an advantage for someone who wants to know the city’s authentic lifestyle . There are several National Monuments in this area, like the National Museum of Ancient Art, the Parliament, Basilica da Estrela, etc., and you can also easily walk to some touristic quarters like Bairro Alto and Chiado or to well known places by the river like the Docas.
Once again thank you very much for your feedback.
Yours sincerely,
Diogo Laranjo

Quite simply probably the best hotel we have ever stayed in. Astonishing value for such a wonderful building and character. The library and balcony were so lovely. Superbly comfortable bed and room and excellent breakfast an coffee. Service attentive and efficient at all times. Yes it really deserves more than 5 stars!

A small, charming and friendly place in which you can just about imagine yourself pleasantly ensconced in the 19th century. (The bathrooms however are entirely modern.) A 'library' on the top (3rd) floor extends to offer a sunny balcony with views over the Tagus, and refreshments are at hand. One can take breakfast in the small secluded garden, and enjoy free entry to the Museu de Arte Antiga next door.

Room Tip: 2nd and 3rd floor rooms facing south have a view across the estuary

We stayed here for four nights in May. It must be the cleanest hotel we have ever stayed in. The rooms are spacious and have lovely old furniture (throughout). The bathroom was large and well equipped with Molton Brown products. Lovely breakfast each morning with lots of choice served in the garden if the weather is good. Nice touch that breakfast service is until mid day so anyone tired from travel can sleep in.
Quiet location . Lovely roof terrace to sit in and a well stocked honesty bar if you dont want to go out. Bus access to Lisbon town and other ares is cheap and just in the road outside the hotel.
Staff are helpful ,in short I would find it difficult to find fault with this charming place

Room Tip: The hotel is on a road (not major) so there is some road noise but we had a room at the side

Stayed here for four days last November. Hotel was very clean with access to large living room and the view at night time. Bathroom was very big and bedroom had a lovely view onto a quiet street which was quiet at night. Bus is a one minute walk from the hotel and take you to the town centre etc. We did the bus tour around the city which was good. Shopping in Lisbon is excellent also, next time we will spend more time here as four days wasn't really enough time to explore everything. All hotel staff were very helpful, friendly and spoke english. Would advise people visiting Lisbon to try to visit the following: Castelo de San Gorge, Bairro Alto (for the shopping), Praca do Comercio (nice for an evening meal), also make sure to take a day to travel to Sintra which was the highlight of our trip. Amazing views and winding streets up to the castle. Can't wait to go back !
