This restaurant is probably one of the few in its kind that has stood the test of time in terms of food quality and service. Dating back to the 60s, the way and care in which it continues to prepare and present the variety of its famous cod-fish (bacalhau) recipes allows it to be considered one of the best for this national dish and a must visit for Portuguese gastronomy.
I recently had lunch with a German friend at this restaurant, where I hadn't been for a while, so I had the opportunity to confirm anew the high quality for this type of food. As a “bacalhau” lover my friend ordered the “couvada de bacalhau”, the specialty of the house, and I had the traditional coal roasted cod. Both were delicious. The huge selection of Portuguese white and red wines is great and fits a moderate budget. An average meal will range anything between 25 and 35 Euros. For a foreigner the terms used to describe the variety of cod recipes are not understandable, so the menu is translated in English and on the restaurant’s website in five foreign languages (http://www.restaurantelaurentina.pt/ementa).
The restaurant offers free parking in the nearby car parks, but as it is located in a busy business quarter it’s advisable to reserve a table in advance. It also offers free WiFi access. Just for the sake of curiosity and as a proof of its concern with tourists and foreigners, the management posted a notice in English in the ladies restroom, which reads “dump the toilet” – probably a Google translation of the equivalent in Portuguese to “flush the toilet”! Nonetheless praiseworthy!
