“Unmissable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

Going to Lisbon and not visiting the Adega is not an option. This is a truly typical traditional restaurant, and although it's popularity with tourists may have brought many foreigners, just come here a bit later during the week (the Portuguese do not have lunch at noon) and order whatever the people who speak the language are ordering. If you ask me, go for the bacalhau grelhado. It comes with potatoes, onions and garlic, with a very generous serving of olive oil. To drink, vinho verde of course, but make sure you don't order a bottle and have it from the tap instead.

“Excellent arroz con mariscos”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

The Adega has a warm local feel - on a Sunday afternoon it was an even mix of locals and tourists. The gents doing the service are pros who crack the odd dry joke. The vinho verde won't set the world on fire but at 8.50 a bottle who's to complain? We shared seafood rice for two and it was generously fleshed out with clams, crab, mussels, and two types of prawns; lots of flavour and a charming rustic presentation. It is perfectly situated for a visit to the Igreja de Sao Roque, almost next door, and I would very much enjoy eating there again.

“Still my favorite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2012

After many years of regular visits to Lisboa, this restaurants remains on the top list of my favorites for its excellent fresh meals of grilled fishes, typical and tasteful.
Do not miss the list of sobremesa (dessert) that you can pick and choose from the kitchen fridge - I recommend the Toucinho do Ceu or the Molotov, one of the best served in Lisboa....

Typical also means that you need to get used to the "futebol" decoration - this is not the most romantic but the overall atmosphere is worth the experience!

“Good Choice for traditional cuisine”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

Four of us tried Adega de Sao Roque on our last night in Lisbon. Too tired to walk any further we got a table in this corner restaurant. Decor is very football orientated. Staff traditional, efficient and friendly. Ordered the seafood stew with squid and clams. Delicious. Had plenty of their lovely rustic bread to soak the dish up. Others ordered fried squid, grilled seabass and baked sardines. All very happy with their meals. House wine served in terracotta jugs was a perfect match and good value. We picked our desserts from the class cabinet. Overall a good value portuguese evening. We walked across the road to a bar in the Barrio Alto for a port night cap before bed. Perfect.

“No-frills restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2012

This was a corner no-frills restaurant near our hotel. We went on our first evening because we were too tired to go anywhere else. The food was OK, but there was a language problem. I ordered swordfish (or Espada) which was on the English translation as swordfish. However a different fish arrived with bones which they called scabbard fish. It was OK but not swordfish! Later on I found out that swordfish is espadarte.Reasonable prices and the rice pudding was nice.
