“Fantastic Food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

My Boyfriend and I were in Lisbon and Uma was recommended by the landlord of the local hostel we stayed at. We also read reviews here as well. We were apprehensive to try it out because of reading how grumpy the owner of the restaurant was said to be, BUT, altho we were rushed into ordering the Seafood Rice, it was absolutely delicious, and I even got the old man to smile at me 2x! :D So overall, we enjoyed the experience. Definitely try it out if you are in the area, but get there early as the little hole in the wall fills up fast!

“Best seafood rice ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

My wife and I came to this resturant after reading the reviews and recommendation from trip advisor. To be honest, I think the ranking should be way higher as its the best seafood rice we have eaten in Lisbon !!!!

The rice and seafood was so fresh and delicious that we wanted to have our dinner there as well (its was full so we could get a table).

Be prepared to wait for your table (better to make reservation), we waited for 45 mins for lunch even at 230pm. In additon, this is a family run business so they cant speak English (just order the seafood rice) and dont expect much service.

“Lisbon jewel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

I went to Uma with my wife, on suggestion of the lovely landlords of our hostel (Artbeat, great place). It is probably one of the very few non touristy places in Baixa, where most of the (even shabby) restaurants have a waiter standing outside trying to get you in their restaurant. You could probably pass by it if you're not looking for it, since the place is quite small and the door is closed (it was december).
The owner speaks only Portuguese and doesn't seem to like foreigners very much, most of the public seems to be local, too. That said, the food was simply fantastic. We had one pan (not a dish, actually a pan full) of rice with gambas and crustaceans, a serving of extra fried gambas, bread and three beers. Total cost, 23€... Basically a steal. The rice was amazing and we actually cleaned the plate the gambas were served on because the oil/sauce thingy it came in was so good.
Great place!

“Good food, unpleasant service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

We went Into this restaurant based on the Trip advisor rating in the window. We were greeted by an old man who did not speak English and was quite rude in the manner in which he treated us. Obviously because we did not speak Portiguese and he not English! He rushed us into ordering something that we did not know what it was, even though he was pushing the seafood rice. However without knowing what was in there, we quickly ordered a pork dish. This turned out to be very good! pork pieces done with clams And a white wine and herbed sauce. Made up for the initial bad feelings! Prices were quite reasonable.

“"No soup for you"”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

Anyone who watched Seinfeld will understand my review title. Without question, one of the worst meals ever and certainly the worst meal so far in Lisbon. This is the first time Trip Advisor has steered us wrong. We arrived shortly before 1800 hrs to discover that Uma did not open until 1800. It was raining steadily and I am sure the gentleman inside could see us but, despite the rain, waited until the appointed hour to open the door. Not a big deal; we were suitable attired and felt the reviews for the "awesome seafood rice dish" would be worth a few raindrops! If hindsight were only 50-50.... we would have dined at the 4.5 star Trip Advisor-rated Indian restaurant next door! We were seated immediately by the kind gentleman who spoke a bit of English...it turned out he was the chef du jour. We told him we wanted the infamous seafood rice dish and some white wine...we received an entire bottle of white wine...good thing it was decent as there was no tasting to begin with! Bread, two small containers of paté and some cheese was provided (which later showed up on the bill, as expected). It was okay. While waiting for our entrée, in entered the Soup Nazi. Grumpy, no smiles or responses to our greetings of good evening. Another couple arrived and were shooed away from a table then seated at another one. A short discussion ensued regarding the menu and they got up & left. Obviously not happy. Our dish was then delivered and to say we were disappointed would be an understatement. The only positive thing I can say is that it was steaming hot. At first look, we thought he had forgotten the rice, there was so much sauce. We rummaged around in the pot and discovered there was rice, it was just stuck to the bottom of the pot. We fished out (pun intended!) the seafood and had great difficulty eating it. What other reviewers failed to mention is that the seafood is STILL IN THE SHELL. I don't mind eating seafood that has been served in the shell, but not when it has been slathered in tomato based sauce and you only have one napkin. To top it off, the sauce etc was so salty, we will both be lapping up water until dawn to counteract the sodium content currently in our system. Our bill came to roughly 35€ and when we failed to leave the grumpy waiter a tip, we probably made the dining experiences of other patrons who wandered in just before we left even worse than ours.

Do yourself a favour - eat at the Indian restaurant next door to Uma. They open at 1800 hrs!
