“No longer hidden, no longer a gem”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

Couldn't agree more with the previous poster. When we first discovered this place several years ago (nine, I think) we were bowled over by the unique beauty of the interior, the high-quality food, good service and low prices. On each successive visit we found it to be more crowded and noisey, the service poorer and the food sinking to a level well below mediocre. If you are in the area, by all means pop in for a look around the place, but eat elsewhere. In the immortal words of Yogi Berra, "Nobody goes there anymore; it's too crowded."

“Supertouristy, and really bad food”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013

It is true that the location is amazing. If you walk by, you should definitely get in and walk around this amazing mauresque palace. But don't eat there!
- The food is disgusting (even though it is quite cheap)
- It is super touristy, I ate there on a Saturday night and there was even a weird 'traditional' concerto of people who walked in to sing during the dinner

“Good food and interesting setting...a bit funky.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

As a lot have pointed out, this place is a little hard to find; even once you enter the building and go up the stairs the entrance is not obvious - we walked into the dining room and that seemed to be the entrance, but we were not sure... However, when we got we got a table right away, the food was very good for the price, and was mostly what we gather is fairly traditional Portuguese food well prepared and tasty. Certainly the food was far better than in other restaurants in Lisbon where we paid the same price. The setting and ambiance was different from most of the other restaurants we visited in Lisbon, and the old palace is quite funky. The service was fairly casual but seemed efficient enough while we were there. We did not see any pick-pocket activity while we were there; there seemed to be only other diners, and there did not seem to be any random people walking around...

“Very, very, very good - on all counts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

We stumbled upon Casa do Alentéjo purely by chance last Thursday evening. We'd just arrived in Lisbon & it was fairly bucketing down, so we ducked into the first doorway that looked remotely like a restaurant.

We had no prior knowledge of the place whatsoever (i.e. were completely unaware of the seemingly diametrically opposing reviews that this restaurant has attracted on Tripadvisor).

Easy to miss from the street, but what a stunning building inside.

We found the service friendly & helpful, and both ate very well. My chickpea & Bacalhau salad was excellent, as was the Carne de porco à Alentejana that followed. Washed down with some very nice (and very affordable) Portugese wine.

All in all we couldn't fault our experience at all - hence I decided to pay them a complement with a review here (something I rarely do). So I was more than a little surprised with the spread of existing feedback that I found.

Having had an ok meal elsewhere the following evening, we chose to return here for dinner on Saturday evening. Albeit busier, but equally friendly service and another very nice meal. I'm a sucker for bread soup - and theirs was great.

BTW: Their deserts are yummy too.

“Beware of thieves”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

Fantastic surroundings - Moorish hall, several rather old-fashioned dining rooms. Food good, hearty and pleasantly rustic. BUT my colleague had her handbag stolen in the course of the evening. We wholeheartedly endorse the recommendation by renata g - please be very careful with your personal belongings if eating in this restaurant.
