The title of this review is an opinion but I will back it with facts.
First the easy bits, repeated endlessly in virtually all previous reviews. The building and grounds are externally very beautiful. Internally the architecture is interesting - in particular the stunning sitting room - if a little higgledy-piggledy in places. The staff are charming, friendly and helpful. The location is very convenient.
So I hope what follows, a factual criticism of several issues, will be helpful and provide a balanced review amongst all the 'fantastic' type reviews that precede it. In fact I went right back to the beginning and only around 3 of over 100 reviews contained negative comment.
Firstly a misrepresentation on their website. It is stated that the room 'Verde' has airconditioning but there was certainly no functioning airconditioning in the room during my recent 4 night stay (3 nights in 'Verde' - see later). A staff member did confirm to me that 'Verde' was not airconditioned when I raised the point. The weather was quite hot and the room stuffy so it was necessary to have a window open and this admitted considerable noise from the street both day and night, in particular from the bin men who visited one morning at 05.50 and on the other mornings before 06.30. There was an efficient fan which helped a little but this did not cool the air. The second room we slept in for one night, 'Anjos', did have effective and virtually silent secondary airconditioning which was a blessing after our previous 3 hot and noisy nights.
Secondly a reservation about cleanliness. Yes at first glance all looks fine but in both our rooms there was considerable black mould all around the shower areas and in the case of 'Anjos' mould behind the taps on the washhand basin. In 'Anjos' the showerhead and plughole to the washhand basin were caked in what can only be described as a black gunge. Both the bathrooms were left in a significantly cleaner state than we found them in. The insides of drawers in both rooms were not particularly clean.
Thirdly, and a real major negative for me, was noise......internal noise, all sorts of noise. Plumbing for a start....the water pressure is great and the toilets flush with the force of Niagara, but this is at a cost of serious noise transmission from room to room. Noise from people opening and closing doors, shutters, wardrobes, cupboards etc travelled as did footsteps in corridors and, in the case of 'Verde, from the room above. But mainly the noise of inconsiderate fellow guests talking loudly travelled far and wide helped by the nature of the construction - marble staircase, wooden/solid floors etc. Every night inconsiderate guests would be heard returning from their evening's entertainment and shouting their 'goodnights' as they headed to their respective rooms. On one night, exasperated by the loud talking and guffawing coming from the sitting room (situated next door to 'Verde') I was reduced to getting out of bed, dressing and walking to the sitting room to request that the volume be turned down.
So to conclude, I was very disappointed. I was expecting more. Fortunately the weather was perfect throughout our stay and we thoroughly enjoyed the lovely town of Cascais.
