“really beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

That was one of the churches that I liked in Portugal. She is beautiful and has lovely gardens inside. I've been to Portugal several years ago and at the time was under renovation, but even so, I remember that was impressive.

“Don't miss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2012

Beautiful old church, lovingly resotred. They sell replicas of the tiles on the walls and the profits go toward their missions.

“A Must See”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2012

The Old Cathedral is located at Largo Sé Velha. In Portuguese it is called the Se Velha and it is one of the most important Romanesque churches in Portugal. The construction of this church started in 1162 when Afonso Henriques declared himself King of Portugal and chose Coimbra as his capital. The king financed the church and this was finished in 1320. The architects were Master Robert, Master Bernardo (both French) and Maestro Soiro. In 1184 Sancho I was crowned in its walls. The construction resembles a castle because it was in the line of defense against the Moors. There are high crenellated walls with few narrow windows.

The façade is composed of a doorway that juts out. The main doorway has arches with diameters that are successively smaller. The arches and columns are delicately ornamented. Over the doorway there is a balcony adorned with columns. At the very top at the tympanum is a Virgen with Child. The ground plan of the church is the Latin cross, with three naves. At the crossing there is a Gothic lantern. The central nave is covered with a vault. The main altarpiece is made of wood that has been gilded and polychromed and was the work of Olivier de Gante and Jean de Ypres, and finished in 1503. It has more than 500 years and is perfectly preserved.

The Chapel of the Sacred Sacrament was restored in the Mannerist way in the 16th century. Its retable was started in 1566 and is one of the best works of Joao de Ruao. The work used the stone from Anca. The cloister was constructed in 1218 and has the Gothic style. Its capitals are adorned with vegetable and animal motifs. Each of the Gothic pointed arches that face the courtyard has two twin round arches in the Romanesque style.
