“Do not recommend”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2010

It could be a great hotel, with the history, the gardens and the main building but it’s just a poor one.
It’s badly managed and the facilities lack class, quality materials and maintenance.
The restaurant has one Michelin star, but it’s not one of the best with this classification, and the breakfast is really limited.
At least, the price that I paid, € 120, to some extent reflects these flaws.

“Wonderful stay in a fabulous hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2009

This hotel is right in the center of Coimbra yet it has a private park (garden plus woods) that makes it surprisingly quiet for its urban setting, even if Coimbra is a fairly peaceful city. It is within walking distance to the historic center of Coimbra and to a couple of stunning medieval monasteries. It’s a charming and comfortable historic hotel, filled with the memories of the tale of Pedro and Ines, the Portuguese version of Romeo and Juliet. She is said to have been killed there 7 centuries ago. The staff was most gracious. The sort of friendly people you find in countryside hotels. The spa looks amazing (a modern contrast to the atmosphere of the old palace) but I did not use it. Had a fantastic meal though at their Michelin star restaurant.
